Republicans have now, by my count, missed two rather large opportunities to improve their general standing with Latino voters. Donald Trump's speech Wednesday (unless it is further postponed or even cancelled outright, of course) might just become the third big missed opportunity.

While the Immigration and Naturalization Service, now known as the Department of Homeland Security, was trying to deport me, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. was arranging an exhibit honoring my contributions to hip-hop culture and society at large.

With all the talk swirling around about immigration, building walls and expelling millions of people from the US, I thought I should tell my story about becoming an American citizen. It's a story of romance, passion, and great expectation and how this all crashed upon the rocks of government bureaucracy only to succeed wonderfully in the end as a manifestation of what makes the country great.

Applying to be a citizen is very challenging - perhaps as it should be. But surveys of LPRs reveal many myths and fears. It is no wonder many have waited decades.

Cities across the U.S. have a clear role to play in ensuring their immigrant communities have support during the naturalization process by creating programs that break down barriers.

I've been following the advice of the Freakonomics guys, who advise us to think like a child and ask seemingly naive questions in the pursuit of higher truths. So I asked myself, "Would something like the Homestead Act for undocumented immigrants be a good idea?"

Latino Voices
Perhaps the media is misconstruing the true pulse of the Latinos when it discusses the possibility of Latinos being turned off by the Republican Party because of Trump rather than being turned off because the party has a long history of anti-Latino politics and policies.

It's been nearly a year since Fox News personality Laura Ingraham tried to float the false idea that Puerto Ricans are not just as American as the rest of us.

Republicans, angry about the undocumented "streaming" across our borders, could turn the flow of immigrants off tomorrow by passing real reform. No, not our immigration laws, but our employment law.

Republicans should be more concerned about the failure of GOP leadership to address this issue. Not only did Boehner miss out on an opportunity to mend fences with a growing Hispanic voting bloc, he has now backed himself into a corner with no clear way out.

The best thing Republicans had going for them in this election was the fact that they weren't in the same party as President Obama. But it would be a huge mistake for them to act as though this was an endorsement of their policies -- a mistake they seem likely to make. A mistake that seems destined to be part of the 2016 Republican autopsy.
