The lessons of Ferguson and Baltimore, and now Milwaukee, remind us those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.
President Obama has said that his final State of the Union address on Tuesday, Jan. 12 will be framed around "the big things" he sees as being priorities in the years to come, rather than taking a policy-centric approach to the speech. He has said that there is more work that needs to be done, and we agree.

In the context of police-community relations, another criterion of group membership at play is place. Humans are territorial animals, and ingroup/outgroup biases may have evolved in tandem with this trait.
Agencies who have adopted or seeking to begin the use of police body cameras should be required to have their implementation evaluated by qualified and objective/independent academic institutions. Those departments that choose to do so should be nationally recognized as model departments.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a groundbreaking initiative to take on one of the most damaging social problems facing the nation: the strained and often broken relationship between many communities and law enforcement. It is time, and past time.
