Perhaps certain regressive taxes are fine. Perhaps all of them are, if we're consciously balancing them against our progressive income tax code. Problem is, we're almost completely oblivious to the regressive aspects of our tax system.
Today, it seems to be all about self. What can my country do for me: A long list of "I want" -- presumed entitlements, as rights, by virtue of American birth. The "home of the free and land of the brave" lost to narcissistic death spiral.
Civic Studies also includes other traditions of theory and practice such as critical theory, community organizing, popular education, and interpretative social science, which recognizes the importance of different kinds of knowledge and different ways of knowing, not simply scientific or academic knowledge.
