"The stars look very different today."
In 1981, I went to my first fraternity party at UC Berkeley and danced to "Rebel Rebel" by David Bowie. I even had on a red jumpsuit a little like the one he wore in the video. I was a freshman at Mills College in Oakland.
I came away with so many things from Bowie. Queer is beautiful: You're never too old to reinvent yourself. Reinvent yourself constantly, and you'll always be ahead of the curve. Be fearless. Be different. What you do today can inspire queer people 40 years from now.
I think of his family today, mourning someone they knew and loved while a world of strangers feels their own grief for whichever incarnation of David Bowie spoke to them.
Believe me, I loved David Bowie. Crazy love. Second only to The Who for at least a year or so. Actually, pretty much from Space Oddity through Aladdin Sane. For some reason, he lost me with Diamond Dogs.
I had my mind blown by a movie Tuesday, in the middle of another five-movie day at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. And it was blown in 3D.
It may seem that I'm diggin' in the dirt. Gettin' back to my punk rock roots. Well, some of my favorite new music does seem a wee bit primal, oui? And some of it is even out this world. But all of this music is party playlist-worthy for any weekend getaway.
