Early one morning I followed the blinking, grinding, lumbering school bus on its routine route to pick up students. Always the consummate people-watcher, I studied the colorful collection of gangly, boisterous pre-teens waiting at each stop. Then I saw her - the girl standing alone. She was me, fifty years ago.

I was a teen when I learned about Gestalt dream work, and I liked the idea of the self-awareness that it espoused. Being in the present, understanding sensations, emotions, and behaviors was intriguing to a young girl on the verge of becoming a woman and falling in love. I was confused.

Life is about honesty. You make a mistake, you learn from it, and then explain to your kids where you screwed up. If you want to lead by example you must do so with unmasked honesty.

She poked her head out from behind the person in front of her, looking for me. We locked eyes and she gave me that sweet, sweet smile. The one that I know. The one that's just for me. The one that says, "Hey Mom."

Teen angst is a feeling that percolates in every clique, every ethnic group, and every socio-economic status. Yes, we as teenagers do have a way of being selfish and sometimes whiney, but there is without a doubt some validity to our gripes.
Books
There are moments in this story that are so affecting that you have to stop reading until you can see the pages through your tears. Is this contrived? Is this manipulative? Maybe it is, but it is also the true heart of the story.
