It's been two weeks since the Oscars aired on television and not one article has surfaced on the inclusion of men in Lady Gaga's performance of "Til It Happens To You." This is disappointing to me.

I debated whether or not I should go; whether my appearance within this performance would also be tokenizing and uphold the idea that the Oscars and media depictions of rape are "more diverse" than they often are. My parents told me I was being ridiculous; obviously I had to go. And the reality is that I wanted to give myself this experience.
College
When we speak about The Survivors, understand that there are so many people behind that word. Their lives hover behind that snapshot you see on your computer screen. Take the time to listen to them, and lift them up. Their voices are powerful, and raw, and they deserve to be heard.

I am back stage at the Oscars. Let me repeat that, because it is truly, truly crazy: I am backstage at the Oscars. I'm not here to dance or sing. I'm certainly not here to accept an award for a film. I am here as a survivor of rape and I'm here with 50 other survivors of sexual assault. We are here to stand on stage with Lady Gaga as she performs "Til It Happens to You" from "The Hunting Ground."

Considering these factors and our cultural context together, it becomes clear that change will not come easily or quickly. Yet, with thoughtful, specialized outreach, we can and should find ways to reach students during this psychologically and emotionally tumultuous time of their adult lives.
