A former Los Angeles Angels employee has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for providing the Angels pitcher the drugs that led to his overdose death in Texas.
Eric Kay was convicted of one count each of drug distribution resulting in death and drug conspiracy. He faces up to life in prison.
The pitcher's family said they were "shocked" after a coroner's report showed he had a mix of alcohol, fentanyl and oxycodone in his system when he died.
"All I do is think about him," the superstar said of playing after the death of his 27-year-old teammate.
Angels superstar Mike Trout called Skaggs, who died suddenly in a hotel room, a great teammate and friend. "We love you."
The team's game against the Texas Rangers has been canceled.
