Turmeric has a very particular flavour. It will add colour to any dish, and also a very subtle earthy taste that will make you go for seconds — but only if paired with complementary ingredients.

So we've decided to put together five of our favourite turmeric-seasoned recipes in the slideshow below.

Red Lentil Soup(01 of05)

Serves five. Ingredients: 1 cup red lentils 1 cup spinach or kale 1 large onion - chopped 2 stocks celery - chopped 2 medium carrots - diced2 cloves garlic - finely cut 2 tbsp cooking oil 1 tbsp cumin1 tbsp turmeric 1 tsp cayenne 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar 6 cups of vegetable broth salt and pepper to taste Instructions: Step one: In a large soup pot heat oil over medium heat. Add onions, carrots and celery; cook and stir until onion is soft. Add garlic and cook for additional 2 minutes.Step two: Add vegetable broth and lentils; bring to a boil. Serves one.Ingredients: 2 large eggs - whisked 1 cup kale - chopped 1 tsp turmeric 1 clove garlic - finely chopped 1 tbsp butter salt and pepper to taste Instructions:Step one: Heat butter in a skillet on medium heat. Add chopped kale; cook and stir until wilted. Add garlic and cook for additional 2 minutes.Step two: Add whisked eggs and stir until cooked. Add turmeric and stir evenly. (credit:The Hearty Soul )

Serves two.Ingredients: 2 chicken breasts1 medium onion -chopped1 cup broccoli1 (14-oz.) can coconut milk1 tsp ginger -grated1 tsp salt 4 tbsp cooking oil 1/2 tsp cumin 1/2 tsp ground coriander 1/2 tsp turmericpinch of mustard seed cilantro - garnish crushed cashew - garnish1 cup basmati rice 1 3/4 cup water Instructions: Curry:Step one: Heat 3 tbsp oil in large wok on medium heat. Add chicken and salt and cook until golden brown. Remove chicken.Step two: Heat 1 tbsp of oil on low. Add onion; cook until tender. Add garlic and ginger and cook for additional 2 minutes. Step three: Add coconut milk and spices and bring to a boil. Add broccoli then let simmer and reduce for 3 minutes. Add chicken and reduce for additional 5 minutes.Step four: Serve curry on bed of basmati rice and garnish with cilantro and crushed cashew. Basmati rice:Step one: Combine rice and water and let soak for 20 minutes. Step two: Bring to a boil and then cover. Reduce heat and let simmer for 15 minutes. Serves five.Ingredients: 4 cups vegetable broth 4 cups coconut milk 4 shallot cloves 2 cups of chopped white button mushrooms 1 portobello mushroom - sliced 20 shrimp 4 tablespoons fish sauce 1 lime - squeezed2 tbsp oil 1 tablespoon crushed thai chili (add more based on spice tolerance) 2 tablespoons honey 1 tbsp turmeric siracha to taste cilantro for garnish 1 package of rice noodles Step one: Heat oil in large soup pot on medium heat. Add shallots and shrimp; stir until shrimp is fully cooked. Step two: Add broth and coconut milk and bring to a boil.
