7 Must-Have Temporary Hair Colour Products To Get Pastel Locks At Home

A low maintenance alternative for people who want to dabble in the mermaid hair trend without having to commit.
|

If "My Little Pony" and "Jem and the Holograms" have taught us anything, it’s that pastel-coloured hair is everything.

The growing trend of dying your hair playful shades of powder pink, green and lavender is of course partially due to our favourite celebrities rocking the whimsical look.

Nicole Richie, who’s no stranger to experimenting with a wild trend and owning it, was one of the early adopters of the pastel hair trend, first sporting lavender locks in March of 2014. Katy Perry, Kesha and Kelly Osborne have also succeeded in obtaining mermaid-approved tresses. And we can’t forget Rainbow Bright in the flesh, model/DJ Chloe Nørgaard who gave the runway a little unexpected splash of colour long before anyone else.

Despite the trend’s happy demeanor, it’s not one you should take lightly. Darker hair typically needs to be stripped to a platinum blond before applying the pastel shade.

That being said, you can still participate in the hair club for mermaids by testing out the waters using temporary hair colour like hair chalk. It’s a low maintenance alternative for people who want to dabble in the trend without having to commit.

In our quest to get the look, we dug up seven temporary hair dyes to try this summer.

Check them out below!

L’Oreal Professionel’s take on temporary colour is easy to apply and fairly mess-free. It comes in eight shades, including more natural colours as well as pink, orange, violet and blue. You simply pour some of the liquid onto a sponge, apply, then blow-dry with a round brush. To achieve a pastel shade, add water to dilute the colour before applying to your hair. $25. Kevin Murphy wanted to create a temporary hair colour that’s as easy to apply as makeup. His brand’s Colour Bug was born with that in mind. To apply, you need to first spray your hair with a setting product and massage the colour into your strands. Shake out your hair to get rid of any excess product and you’re ready to go. The high definition colour also works well on darker hair. $35. Available at salons. (credit:Kevin Murphy)
Bumble And Bumble Spray Chalk(04 of07)

The high-end hair care brand’s temporary colour comes in a small chic little spray can. This product is best for applying wisps of colour, rather than dying large chunks of your hair. Try braiding your hair or putting it up in a bun, finishing with a little spritz of pastel blue. $19. Available at bumbleandbumble.com. (credit:Bumble and bumble)
Rita Hazan Pop Colour(05 of07)

Celebrity hair stylist, Rita Hazan, is responsible for some of the memorable hair looks on colour chameleon, Katy Perry. So we’re not the least bit surprised that she came up with her own brand of temporary hair colour. Like Bumble and bumble’s Spray Chalk, Kazan’s Pop Colour also comes in a canister and is best applied on dry hair. $18. Available at RitaHazan.com. (credit:Rita Hazan)

The classic temporary hair dye we’ve all used as rebellious teenagers is on this list because it has clearly stood the test of time.
