AGI Envirotank's Job Ad Demands Hockey Skills, Other Qualifications Not Mentioned

A manufacturer of fuel tanks in Saskatchewan is busily searching for welders, drafters and construction workers, but the number-one skill required of a candidate? Wanting to join the local hockey team.

AGI Envirotank in Biggar, Sask., is looking for someone “to work and continue to play senior men’s hockey while establishing a career,” according to a job ad placed this week.

“Senior hockey is returning to Biggar this fall when Biggar rejoins the Sask Valley Senior B Hockey League," the ad states. "AGI Envirotank, a well established and successful tank manufacturer in Biggar, has committed to supporting the development of this senior team.”

Other than joining the hockey team, no other specific skills are listed in the ad.

In a discussion on Reddit, some commenters noted this may actually be part of an unofficial tradition in Canada.

“I had heard of this being done way back in the 1940s to attract miners to remote regions,” wrote user RambleMan.

“I'm told by my dad, who pitched semi-pro in the 30s, that in small town Manitoba the bank manager, the teacher, and the priest were all selected for their hockey or baseball abilities,” wrote user Redly. “This was the only chance to get a ringer on the town team.”

It's not all about the ice for AGI Envirotank; the company is also advertising a position for a welder, and the ad makes no mention of hockey.
