It’s a Canadian crossover nobody expected.
Showrunners for the CBC’s “Anne” released a clip of the series’ opening sequence on Thursday, tracked to the tune of a beloved hit from The Tragically Hip.
Gord Downie’s iconic first verse of “Ahead By A Century” helps viewers sail through a dreamy golden woodland, introducing them to the latest adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables books.
Fans marvelled at the combination of the two genres.
Filmed in Ontario and P.E.I., the revival will preserve Anne’s fiercely independent and curious nature — timeless characteristics that have charmed readers all over the world since 1908, executive producer Miranda de Pencier said.
“Anne is a survivor. She's someone ... that stays positive in the face of real crushing difficulty and that's inspiring,” de Pencier told The Canadian Press.
Actress Amybeth McNulty plays Anne Shirley in the new series which premieres Sunday. “Anne” is also set for release on Netflix later this spring.
