Most assume that all celebrity parents have nannies for their kids, but that simply isn’t true. A good handful of famous moms and dads have opted out of this common practice.

In the slideshow below, we take a look at these celebrity parents and why they’ve chosen not to have nannies.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis welcomed their baby girl, Wyatt Isabelle, in October 2014. When they first became new parents, Kutcher told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show that they want to be as hands on as possible, which is why they didn’t hire a nanny. “We just want to know our kid,” the 37-year-old said. “We want to be the people that know what to do when the baby’s crying to make the baby not cry anymore. We want to know, like, when she makes a little face or something, we want to be emotionally in touch with her. And I think the only way to do that is by being the one who’s there.” (credit:Noel Vasquez via Getty Images)

It’s no secret that Celine Dion and her husband René Angélil struggled to have kids. So once the Canadian singer finally had her twins Eddy and Nelson, she refused to hire a nanny. “I didn't have these children to not take care of them, to give myself to them 200 - 300 per cent,” the 47-year-old told French magazine Gala in 2011. “I am changing diapers and breastfeeding and that's something where no one can take my place. It's tiring but an intense joy. I take things day by day. That's the secret to me.”Dion and Angélil also have another son, René-Charles, who was nine years old when the twins were born. No nanny, no problem. In a recent interview with GQ, Ryan Reynolds admitted he loves not having a nanny. “I have no problem waking up five times in the middle of the night and changing diapers,” the “Deadpool” star said. “And as exhausted as you get, I have this stupid grin on my face all the time. And that’s not because I have a nanny or something like that. It’s just us right now, and I love it.”Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively welcomed their daughter James in December 2014. When Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s twins Max and Emme were first born, the couple didn’t have a nanny. To cope, the couple split the day into two shifts so that there was always a parent on duty. In an interview with Billy Bush in 2008, Anthony said: “[Lopez] expects me to help and she makes no bones about it. I get the late shift. I get literally from 10 [p.m.] on because we don’t have a nanny. It’s just me and Jennifer figuring it out. From 10 p.m. to 8 [a.m.], that’s my shift.”After the couple announced their split in 2011, Lopez then revealed to Vanity Fair that she tried nannies before but “it wasn’t for me.” According to the publication, the singer didn’t like being away from her kids for more than 24 hours. Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell welcomed twin girls, Dolly and Charlie, in 2008. Three years later, the “X-Men” actress explained to Redbook why she’s never been interested in having a nanny. Explaining the couple's parenting system, Romijn said: “We're each other's assistants. We pick up each other's slack. Whoever is less busy helps the busier one: ‘Can you go pick this up for me?’ or ‘Can you book my flight?’ That's what real life is. Once you start paying somebody else to do the grunt work, who are you?” (credit:Frank Micelotta/Invision/AP)

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling are parents to one-year-old Esmeralda. Earlier this year, Mendes spoke to InStyle magazine and revealed, “I'm a very hands-on mom; I don't have a nanny. No matter how tired I am, I just do it.”A few months later, the new mom clarified that while the couple decided not to hire a nanny, they do rely on their family for help. “I’ve never appreciated my family so much, they’ve been amazing,” the 41-year-old said. “I don’t technically have a nanny, but I do have help. I like to clarify. I’m certainly not anti-nanny, you do what you need to do as a parent, but I’m so grateful that I have help with my family and [Ryan's] family.” (credit:Sonia Recchia via Getty Images)

Before her son was born, the “Criminal Minds” actress revealed to People that they have never had a nanny. “We didn’t have a night nurse, we didn’t have a nanny,” the mom said. “We haven’t ever had any of that stuff. It’s been really interesting to do it all ourselves.” (credit:CHRIS PIZZELLO/INVISION/AP)

During their seven-year marriage, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe had two kids: Ava and Deacon. Looking back, Phillippe admits he’s glad they didn’t have a nanny. “I imagine it would have been more difficult if we weren’t as hands-on as we were or allowed them to be raised by nannies,” he said. “I think then they would become a**holes. But you’re constantly educating them – we have two incredible little people that we’ve raised. I’m proud of us for that fact.”Since their divorce in 2007, Witherspoon has started a new family with Jim Toth. The two married in 2011 and now have a two-year-old son named Tennessee. And while Tennessee is still young, it doesn’t look like Witherspoon will need a nanny for him either! The actress’ daughter is now 16 years old and is often photographed taking care of her little brother.

Speaking to Tatler Magazine in 2010, Macpherson revealed that not hiring a nanny was “one of the best decisions I ever made.” “I have help, but I don't have a nanny and it has been one of the best decisions I ever made because I get to participate in all aspects of my children's lives,” the model said. “I don't just walk in and do ‘good time’ mom. I do ‘wake up, even though you don't want to get out of bed’ mom. I do ‘I’m making you breakfast and I’m sorry but you have to have fruit’ mom. I do, ‘we are doing your homework together whether you like it or not and then we can have fun’ mom. There is a profoundness to my experiences.” (credit:ASSOCIATED PRESS)
