Edmonton Oilers fans have had enough.
One lone jersey, tossed onto the ice following Saturday's 6-0 loss to the St. Louis, illustrates the feelings of many Edmontonians – a group fed up with their team's terrible performance not only this season, but in so many seasons past.
Curtis Goyetche made headlines over the weekend when he took off his No. 83, Ales Hemsky jersey, threw it over the glass, discarding it onto the Rexall Place ice as the Oilers were booed off following their loss to the Blues.
Goyetche told the Edmonton Sun he's been a loyal fan his whole life, but the team's performance Saturday night was the last straw.
“I just felt I had to do something.
“I was just fed up. Frustrated. I was just being a passionate fan making my own statement, I guess. It just happened.”
“Whoever threw that jersey on the ice, they’re out, they’ve given up, they’re a quitter,” said Eakins during a press conference.
“We don’t want that here.”
“For some fan to show us all that he quit, he’s done, he threw in the towel, I think that says volumes about the individual. I don’t believe this city was built on people like that,” he added.
The fan frustration is understandable. Currently sitting 29th in the league, Saturday was the sixth straight loss for the Oilers. The team has only landed one playoff berth in the past 10 years. This was supposed to be the season the Oilers emerged from their rebuild and took a playoff run.
But with a record of 11-24-3, and at the bottom of the Western Conference, there's no chance for redemption this season.
So the fans are rising up. They're attempting to organize a mass jersey toss, and someone has even created an online petition to fire President Kevin Lowe.
