A man skinny dipping off the coast of Vancouver Island Monday found himself in hot water after making threats against Nanaimo Search and Rescue.

Rescuers were dispatched to the water near Stone's Marina and Newcastle Island following a 911 call reporting a man in distress. On attempting to pull him out of the water, the man resisted and threatened to harm the SAR team, Nanaimo RCMP said in a news release.

The man then swam to shore and ran away, whereupon rescuers noted he was naked. The swimmer's erratic behaviour and his nakedness raised concerns about his and the public's safety, the police statement said, and so a dog handler was put on his trail.

After being tracked down and taken to Nanaimo Regional Hospital, where he was cleared medically, the man was transported to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment where further investigation of the day's events continues, police said.
