Two children were killed by a freak hailstorm that surprised residents of the Siberian lakeside city of Bredsk on Saturday.

An investigation into the deaths of the two girls aged three and four has been opened by Russian authorities, according to the Associated Press. They died from traumatic brain injuries after a tree fell on a tent they sought shelter under.

In a video uploaded Saturday, beachgoers in Novosibirsk are seen desperately seen running for cover, huddling under umbrellas and grabbing towels to cover their heads.

Temperatures were hovering around 37 degrees Celsius before the storm broke.

“It was like being hit by raining bullets from the sky,” one sunbather told The Siberian Times.

Sploid described the scene to be reminiscent of “the beginning of the Apocalypse.”

According to the Moscow Times, the storm dropped hailstones the size of golf balls and hen eggs. One local forecaster described the event as a rare phenomenon.

The outlet cites Galina Sheporenko saying: "The last time such an event [happened] in the middle of July was 100 years ago. In 1912-1914 there was a cold snap and freshly fallen snow.”

But the deadly hailstorm wasn't the only unusual weather activity to strike Russia that day.

In the country's eastern Ural region, a summer snowstorm caused snowdrifts along roads and dropped temperatures close to freezing.
