How To Recreate 5 Toronto Fashion Week Beauty Trends

Toronto Fashion Week Fall 2012 was a mix of piglets on the catwalk, models walking barefoot, and textured fabrics like feathers and fur. And the hair and makeup also made their own impact -- and the beauty trends that emerged may be the most attainable of all the drama seen on that runway.

We saw everything from black lipstick at Caitlin Power,dramatic eyeliner at VAWK and Victorian-style braided hair at Chloe Comme Parris. Even with a range of designers throughout the week, there were five trends that were shown repeatedly on the runway.

This year, besides changing Fashion Week's official name to World MasterCard Fashion Week, the beauty scene received new sponsorship from Maybelline Canada for makeup and REDKEN for hair. Grace Lee, the head makeup artist for Maybelline Canada, says many designers had a focus on the eyes and lips. From layers of mascara to nude and dark lips, Lee helped create signature colours and textures for each collection. We also saw trends in nails from Essie Canada with printed patterns, matte finishes and dark purple stick-ons.

Here's how to take the beauty looks we loved from the runway and add them to your personal style.

Top Beauty Trends Of Toronto Fashion Week

The Dark Lip(01 of05)

WHY WE LOVE IT: A dramatic dark purple, red -- and, if you're up for it -- even black lipstick, easily brings attention to the face. If you do try this look, remember that honing in on one part of your face will make your look bolder -- skip the dark lashes if you're going for a dark lip.

WHERE WE SAW IT: Chloe Comme Parris, Caitlin Power, Pink Tartan, David Dixon, Martin Lim

HOW TO: Using a dark lip liner, trace the outline of your lips. Use your favourite dark lipstick and fill in the lip. Don't rub your lips together -- apply an even amount on both lips. If your natural lip colour has a brown hue, you can use a neutral primer to make the lipstick look brighter. To finish, use a similar toned lipgloss with an added touch of shimmer.

Dark Nails(02 of05)

WHY WE LOVE IT: When it comes to getting your beauty look together, don't forget about the nails. Nails offer a palette to experiment with colour, patterns and length to personalize favourite looks. A dark nail is not only visually stunning, it also allows you to create designs with lighter colours.

WHERE WE SAW IT: VAWK/VAWKKIN, Chloe Comme Parris, Rudsak, Pink Tartan

HOW TO: On the runway we saw a mix of long and short nails. If your nails are short, you can use stick-on nails for the time being. Before you apply your first coat of nail polish, use a clear base first. Once it dries, apply one to two layers of your dark colour, depending on how dark you want the nail to be. To finish, apply a clear coat of nail polish and wait for it to dry for at least 20 minutes.

Straight Hair(03 of05)

WHY WE LOVE IT: Depending on the length of your hair, layers or bangs, straight hair adds additional length, a sleek silhouette and gives your hair the ability to be light and free, and for some, thick and heavy.

WHERE WE SAW IT: Rudsak, Pink Tartan, Caitlin Power, Ashtiani

HOW TO: Before using a flat iron, make sure to coat your hair with a heat protective spray. Then wait until it dries -- never use an iron over damp hair. Next, use a comb to create a part. We saw a lot of parts in the middle on the runway, but you can also try the side part to change things up. Then, sectioning your hair and starting from the bottom, use your flat iron to go through each section and go over the strands at least three times. Finish off by lightly spraying hairspray or add a bobby pin to the side.

Dark Dramatic Eyes(04 of05)

WHY WE LOVE IT: A dramatic, smokey eye or dark black eyeliner doesn't have to be intimidating. If you're afraid of going too drastic, take baby liner steps. On the first attempt, try dark mascara and gradually build your way up to black liquid liner and eventually a smokey eye with black eyeshadow.

WHERE WE SAW IT: Joe Fresh, VAWK/VAWKKIN, Eva Chen

HOW TO: For a simple smokey lined look, you can prep your eyelid with a nude primer. Take a liquid eyeliner and go over the top of your eyelid, getting as close as you can to your lash line. Next, take black eyeshawdow and using a smudging brush, dab in some powder around the outer corners of your eye, fading out the liner. Lastly, take a plush mascara and apply two to three layers on your top lashes (you can also curl them beforehand, but never do so after mascara). Skip the bottom lashes and use a pencil liner to fill out the bottom part of your eyelid call the waterline and inner corners.

The Ponytail(05 of05)

WHY WE LOVE IT: If you're looking for a ponytail with a flirty and feminine feel, try adding curls. This look is the perfect combination of bounce and volume.

WHERE WE SAW IT: Saniya Khan, Joe Fresh, Martin Lim

HOW TO: Use a hair protecting spray and evenly spray throughout hair. Next, leaving one strand to the side, use a large barrel curling iron to create waves in your hair. Focus your curls at the bottom of your hair and use hairspray to keep it in place. Finally, tie your hair into a ponytail and use that extra strand to wrap around your hair tie. For this look, the stylist also twisted some strands of hair before tying the ponytail together.
