In a shocking incident, a lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army allegedly committed suicide on Friday after attempting to strangle his junior.

According to a report in the Times Of India, Lt Col T. Jadhav, who worked as an anaesthetist at the Mathura military hospital, had gone for a long drive on Friday with a nursing assistant, his junior at the hospital, when the incident occurred.

Jadhav, a father of two, had been depressed ever since his junior officer told him that she was calling off the relationship as her wedding had been fixed, a police officer reportedly said.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), a depressed Jadhav asked the victim to go on a drive with him on Friday night as he wanted to discuss something with her.

"After reaching Sri Radha Radha colony, Lt Col Jadhav asked the junior officer to join him in a suicide pact. When she tried to reason with him, he attempted to strangle her," TOI quoted Mathura city Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Ashok Kumar Singh, as saying.

"The woman officer said she resisted the attempt and managed to free herself after a hard struggle, and jumped out. Lt Col Jadhav then locked himself in the car and injected what appears to be a poisonous substance into his thigh," ASP Singh added.

The family members of the deceased meanwhile have submitted a written complaint alleging that Jadhav was murdered as a result of a conspiracy.

The police is investigating the matter.
