Un véhicule a foncé dans une foule qui sortait d'un bar d'Austin, au Texas, après un spectacle présenté dans le cadre du populaire festival South by Southwest.
La police d'Austin a fait état de deux morts, un homme et une femme qui étaient en mobylette, et une vingtaine de blessés, dont cinq dans un état grave.
Le conducteur du véhicule a été arrêté. Selon les policiers, l'automobiliste a conduit sa voiture à travers une barricade dressée pour empêcher les véhicules de pénétrer dans le périmètre du festival, réservé aux piétons. Il a mis du temps à s'arrêter, heurtant plusieurs personnes et véhicules au passage.
Il était possiblement en état d'ébriété et venait d'être intercepté par les policiers. Il a réussi à leur échapper en empruntant une rue en sens inverse et s'est dirigé vers la zone piétonne.
Le festival South by Southwest est à la fois un évènement musical et cinématographique. Des personnalités importantes du monde des nouvelles technologies s'y rassemblent chaque année pour discuter des dernières innovations, dans le cadre du volet interactif.
Cette année notamment, les lanceurs d'alerte Edward Snowden et Julian Assange ont donné des conférences par vidéo.
