Kevin Vickers qui a abattu l'homme qui a fait irruption dans le parlement canadien après avoir abattu un soldat qui montait la garde d'honneur devant le Monument commémoratif de guerre, à Ottawa, le 22 octobre vient d'être nommé ambassadeur en Irlande.

M. Vickers, 58 ans, est devenu sergent d'armes des Communes il y a huit ans, après une longue carrière consacrée à la sécurité publique. Il a souvent assuré la sécurité de dignitaires en visite au Canada, dont la reine Élisabeth II et le prince Andrew.

Il a été policier à la Gendarmerie royale du Canada (GRC) pendant 29 ans, gravissant les échelons jusqu'au grade de surintendant principal. Au cours de sa carrière, il a souvent été le visage de la GRC au Nouveau-Brunswick. Il a notamment dirigé les opérations lors de la crise de Burnt Church, communément appelée la guerre du homard. M. Vickers a mené des enquêtes de haut niveau et a reçu plusieurs récompenses, dont la médaille du jubilé de la reine et la médaille d'ancienneté de la GRC.

Avant d'être nommé directeur des opérations de sécurité à la Chambre des communes, en juin 2005, il était aide de camp du lieutenant-gouverneur du Nouveau-Brunswick.
