TORONTO _ Le ministère des Affaires étrangères du Canada dit être en contact avec les autorités malaisiennes pour aider deux Canadiens qui pourraient faire face à des accusations pour avoir posé nus au sommet du mont Kinabalu.
Le porte-parole Nicolas Doire a précisé que le Canada était au courant que ses ressortissants étaient retenus dans ce pays et que les représentants consulaires canadiens discutaient avec leurs homologues malaisiens.
Le ministère canadien n'a pas voulu révéler le nom des deux personnes pour des raisons de confidentialité, mais les autorités malaisiennes ont indiqué qu'il s'agissait de Lindsey Petersen et Danielle Petersen, un frère et une soeur.
Un séisme de magnitude 5,9 a secoué le pays, vendredi, et les chemins de randonnée de la montagne ont été ensevelis de roches dans l'État de Sabah, sur l'île de Bornéo. Treize corps ont été découverts sous les décombres et les recherches se poursuivaient dimanche pour retrouver six alpinistes portés disparus.
Samedi, le ministre principal adjoint de l'État de Sabah Joseph Pairin Kitingan a blâmé un groupe d'étrangers _ dont les deux Canadiens _ pour avoir provoqué le séisme alors qu'ils auraient "manqué de respect à la montagne sacrée" en posant nus à son sommet.
Selon les autorités, les étrangers _ deux Canadiens, deux Néerlandais et un Allemand _ se sont écartés de leur groupe et se sont déshabillés avant de se photographier au sommet de la montagne le 30 mai.
Floyd Petersen a affirmé qu'il n'avait pas été informé des allégations qui pèsent contre son fils et sa fille. Il savait que ses enfants voyageaient au sud de l'Asie, mais il n'a pas été mis au courant de l'incident présumé. "Auriez-vous dit que vous avez fait cela à vos parents?", a-t-il lancé, en entrevue téléphonique de son domicile de Wood Mountain, en Saskatchewan.
Il a ajouté que ses enfants ne l'avaient appelé que quelques fois depuis le début de leur périple. "Je n'ai rien à dire. Je suis en train d'absorber tout cela", a-t-il indiqué.
Des médias locaux ont rapporté samedi que les deux Canadiens pourraient faire face à des accusations devant les tribunaux autochtones pour avoir porté atteinte à leurs lois. Les touristes, qui seraient en détention préventive à Kota Kinabalu, pourraient être accusés dès lundi.
