Le vice-premier ministre et ministre de l'Innovation et de l'Éducation postsecondaire, Dave Hancock, deviendra le chef intérimaire du Parti progressiste-conservateur de l'Alberta, après l'entrée en vigueur de la démission d'Alison Redford, dimanche.
Selon la constitution du Parti progressiste-conserveur, un nouveau chef permanent, qui deviendra de facto le prochain premier ministre, sera choisi d'ici quatre à six mois.
Dave Hancock, qui en est à son cinquième mandat comme député d'Edmonton-Whitemud, est également vice-président du comité politique du cabinet et membre du Conseil du trésor et du comité de l'agenda et des priorités.
Avant décembre 2013, il a été notamment ministre des Services à la personne, ministre de l'Éducation et leader du gouvernement. Il a également été ministre de la Santé dans le cabinet Stelmach. Du temps du premier ministre Klein, il a occupé divers postes ministériels, dont celui de l'Éducation postsecondaire, de la Justice, des Affaires intergouvernementales et autochtones.
Il a participé à la course à la direction du parti conservateur provincial en 2006, après la démission de Ralph Klein. La course a été remportée par Ed Stelmach.
Diplômé en science politique, en économie et en droit à l'Université de l'Alberta, M. Hancock est un avocat de formation qui a travaillé notamment pour la firme Matheson & cie.
Le nouveau chef intérimaire des conservateurs provinciaux est né à Fort Resolution dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest. Il a habité à Hazelton en Colombie-Britannique et aussi à Vermillion, dans le nord de l'Alberta, avant de déménager à Edmonton pour ses études postsecondaires.
L'homme est marié à Janet Hancock. Le couple a trois enfants.
