Dieu est un mot tabou dans nos sociétés sécularisées. Pour plusieurs, il est synonyme d'obscurantisme et d'aliénation ; il menace la démocratie et brime l'autonomie. On le confond sans cesse avec les religions, qui, devenues suspectes et dépassées, sont souvent réduites à des caricatures, voire aux minorités les plus fanatiques.

On ne me fouettera jamais pour avoir écrit ce texte. Raif Badawi, lui, a été condamné à 1000 coups de fouet et 10 ans prison pour avoir blogué.

Même si Dieu est incompréhensible de nature, les mots et les idées ne manquent pas pour l'évoquer et l'invoquer. Du tam-tam à l'ordinateur, des tablettes d'argile aux écrans tactiles, la notion de Dieu vient de loin et on entend toujours son écho, tant elle résiste à l'usure. Pourtant, on parle d'un retour de Dieu, comme s'il était parti ? N'est-il pas là où on le laisse entrer ?

Chaque individu a ses raisons de croire en Dieu ou pas, et nul besoin de tourner le croyant ou l'incroyant en dérision pour justifier sa position. La réflexion n'empêche pas le dialogue, la liberté d'expression le respect. Or, Dieu est un mot tabou dans nos sociétés sécularisées. "Cachez ce Dieu que je ne serais voir", pourrait dire Molière. Pour plusieurs, il est synonyme d'obscurantisme et d'aliénation ; il menace la démocratie et brime l'autonomie. On le confond sans cesse avec les religions, qui, devenues suspectes et dépassées, sont souvent réduites à des caricatures, voire aux minorités les plus fanatiques. Que faire alors quand des extrémistes tuent au nom de Dieu, l'utilisent telle une arme de destruction, comme on l'a vu récemment dans les locaux de Charlie Hebdo ? J'en ai parlé dans un blogue précédent.

Dieu est mystère

Mais de quel Dieu s'agit-il ? L'idée de Dieu varie selon les traditions, les cultures, les croyances, les religions. Quand quelqu'un proclame qu'il croit en Dieu, il importe donc de spécifier à quelle image de Dieu il se réfère, de quel livre sacré il s'inspire et, surtout, comment il l'interprète. Le dialogue est alors possible, tout en reconnaissant avec humour et humilité qu'on ne sait pas tout de Dieu et qu'il se dit beaucoup mieux dans le silence.

Nietzsche affirmait qu'une chose expliquée cesse de nous intéresser. Dieu a un bel avenir devant lui ! Personne ne peut épuiser son mystère ni vider sa substance. Le poète américain Wallace Stevens en convenait dans l'une de ses maximes : « La plus grande idée poétique du monde est et a toujours été l'idée de Dieu. » Peut-on faire de la place à cette idée dans nos cultures, en discuter sereinement dans les médias, étudier son évolution à l'école dans des cours d'histoire et de philosophie ?

Vouloir éluder la question de Dieu dans nos sociétés laïques, c'est la laisser entre les mains d'extrémistes qui s'en servent pour justifier leur nihilisme destructeur. La laïcité doit combattre ce terrorisme, sans rejeter pour autant les religions et n'y voir seulement que du négatif. Par exemple, on peut critiquer l'Islam, sans dénigrer les musulmans. Les djihadistes se nourrissent de la division et de l'ignorance pour alimenter leur idéologie meurtrière. Le pari est de tenir ensemble la liberté d'expression et le respect de l'autre, en ce siècle que Malraux avait prédit qu'il serait religieux.

Libre de croire ou non

Le 12 janvier 2015, le pape François mettait en garde contre les formes déviantes de la religion : «Que les responsables religieux, politiques et intellectuels, en particulier musulmans, condamnent toute interprétation fondamentaliste et extrémiste de la religion visant à justifier de tels actes de violence». Il en rajoutait deux jours plus tard en canonisant Joseph Vaz, premier saint du Sri Lanka et grande figure de réconciliation : «Tout individu doit être libre, seul ou associé avec d'autres, de chercher la vérité, d'exprimer ouvertement ses convictions religieuses, libre des intimidations et des contraintes extérieures».

Que l'on soit croyant ou mécréant, l'important n'est-il pas de demeurer dans l'intelligence du cœur et la compassion, en se faisant proche de ceux et celles avec qui nous vivons ? Parce qu'au fond, la question «Qui est Dieu?» renvoie à «Qui je suis?», à la quête de sens et de bonheur, à l'actualité de la souffrance et de la mort. Éluder ce questionnement métaphysique creuse un vide spirituel, nous éloigne de notre intériorité, ce que les mystiques appellent le cœur, l'âme.

L'amour seul est digne de foi

On peut se poser une autre question : la foi est-elle crédible? La foi, disait la philosophe Simone Weil, « c'est l'intelligence éclairée par l'amour ». À ce compte, l'amour seul est digne de foi. La foi indique une direction par un chemin autre que la science. Elle précède le savoir et elle est impossible à vérifier en laboratoire. C'est un acte qui donne d'entrer en relation avec Dieu, surtout dans la prière. Je comprends que le côté surnaturel de la foi la rend hermétique et suspecte aux yeux de plusieurs qui craignent le dogmatisme et le prosélytisme. Mais la foi peut être aussi occasion de dialogue et de partage, comme les rencontres de prière pour la paix à Assise avec les représentants des grandes religions et sagesses.

Dieu est commun à tous, il n'appartient à aucune caste en particulier. Il est discret et secret, comme l'amour et la vie. Il échappe toujours aux catégories, aux définitions, aux images, aux pensées, aux caricatures. Il se voile et se dévoile en même temps. On le voit mieux dans le silence et l'art, dans la foi et la prière. Les monastères, les sanctuaires et les hauts lieux de spiritualité témoignent de sa fécondité. Le chercher peut combler une vie. On le trouve surtout dans l'amour de l'autre, car « celui qui n'aime pas son frère, qu'il voit, est incapable d'aimer Dieu, qu'il ne voit pas » (1 Jean 4, 20).
