Fusillade à Ottawa: une médaille pour les six sauveteurs

Les six personnes qui ont tenté de sauver la vie du caporal Nathan Cirillo lors de la fusillade du 22 octobre dernier à Ottawa ont reçu la Médaille de sauvetage.

Au son du Dernier Appel, les six citoyens lui ont rendu hommage samedi, huit mois après le drame.

À l'endroit où le caporal s'est effondré, abattu par Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, l'hommage ravive le souvenir de ce soldat qui lutte pour sa vie.

Les six personnes honorées samedi se trouvaient près du monument commémoratif de guerre, par hasard, à vaquer à leurs activités quotidiennes le 22 octobre dernier.

Tous se souviennent du drame, qui a laissé de profondes traces. « Si j'avais été plus rapide? Si j'avais pu faire autre chose d'une façon différente? Je me sentais coupable. Je ne voulais pas sortir dehors, je restais dans la noirceur », explique M.Magnan.

L'Ordre de St-Jean a tenu à honorer leur geste héroïque en leur décernant la médaille de Sauvetage, un honneur pour tous les récipiendaires.

« J'ai les émotions mélangées. Je serais beaucoup plus content si l'homme n'était pas mort. Mais pour moi et ma famille, ça me fait un grand honneur d'être ici », poursuit M.Magnan.

Si aujourd'hui les membres du groupe affirment se sentir mieux, c'est en raison des liens qui les unissent. De parfaits inconnus avant le drame, une véritable amitié s'est bâtie entre eux.
