Les grandes marques, parfois maladroites dans leur communication, ne sont jamais à l'abri des "bad buzz" notamment sur les réseaux sociaux. Mais il arrive qu'à l'inverse leur prise de position fasse l'unanimité auprès des consommateurs. C'est le cas pour la marque de vêtements GAP qui a clairement pris position en faveur d'un de ses modèles victime d'un tag raciste.
Tout commence le 24 novembre, lorsque Arsalan Iftikhar, journaliste pour le magazine "The Islamic Monthly", poste une photo sur Twitter d'une pub pour GAP taguée. Sur l'affiche deux personnes posent: à côté d'une jeune femme se trouve l'acteur et créateur de bijoux Waris Ahluwalia. Indien-Américain, ce dernier est de confession sikh, ce qui explique qu'il porte un turban.
Le tag détourne le slogan de GAP "Make Love" (faites l'amour) en "Make Bombs" (faites des bombes). Le tagueur a également ajouté au marqueur: "Please stop driving TAXIS" ("Arrêtez de conduire des taxis").
Dès le lendemain, GAP a réagi. La marque a demandé au journaliste de prendre contact avec elle afin de savoir où l'affiche en question se trouvait.
"Bonjour. Merci de nous en avoir informé. Pouvez-vous nous suivre et nous envoyer un message privé? Nous aimerions connaître la localisation de cette affiche"
Mais la marque ne s'est pas contentée de cela. Pour afficher son soutien et sa solidarité à Waris Ahluwalia, elle a changé la photo de couverture de son compte Twitter pour y mettre l'affiche originale.
Une réaction saluée par les internautes notamment ceux de la communauté sikh. Une page Facebook "Thank you, Gap" a d'ailleurs été créée.
Quant à Waris Ahluwalia, il a salué le soutien qui lui a été apporté en postant une photo sur son page Facebook. Sur celle-ci, deux enfants reproduisent l'affiche GAP dans laquelle il pose:
Les attaques racistes contre les sikhs se sont multipliées aux Etats-Unis notamment depuis les attentats du 11-Septembre. Nombreux sont ceux qui assimilent en effet leur turban et leur barbe à des symboles terroristes.
