STOCKHOLM - Le géant suédois de l'habillement H&M a annoncé, lundi, qu'il signerait la charte sur la sécurité des usines textiles rédigée par des syndicats au Bangladesh à la suite du décès d'un millier d'employés de l'industrie du vêtement dans l'effondrement d'un édifice survenu le mois dernier en banlieue de la capitale bangladaise.
Assurant que la sécurité était extrêmement importante à ses yeux, l'entreprise a révélé dans un communiqué qu'elle soutenait l'Accord sur la sécurité incendie et bâtiments au Bangladesh, une initiative du syndicat IndustriALL.
Selon H&M, les signataires de l'entente se sont engagés à faire en sorte que l'industrie bangladaise du prêt-à-porter soit sécuritaire et durable afin que ses travailleurs n'aient plus à craindre les incendies, les écroulements et les autres accidents pouvant être éviter grâce à des politiques de santé et de sécurité au travail élémentaires.
Le 29 avril dernier, 40 détaillants de vêtements, dont H&M, Wal-Mart et J.C. Penney, avaient participé à une rencontre avec des groupes de défense des travailleurs en Allemagne afin de discuter des moyens pour améliorer la sécurité au sein des manufactures textiles du Bangladesh.
Les groupes ont fixé au 15 mai la date limite pour les sociétés qui désirent ratifier l'Accord, en vertu duquel les détaillants devront financer les améliorations apportées aux usines bangladaises et permettre qu'elles fassent l'objet d'inspections indépendantes.
Une entente similaire élaborée l'an dernier par les syndicats avait été rejetée par les entreprises, qui l'estimaient trop coûteuse et trop contraignante sur le plan légal.
Lundi, H&M a déclaré que le nouvel accord d'une durée de cinq ans était une mesure pragmatique et a exhorté l'ensemble des détaillants à créer une vaste coalition afin qu'une entente couvrant la totalité des 5000 manufactures du Bangladesh soit conclue.
