Des voleurs équipés d'engins de chantier et de grues ont dérobé en pleine nuit en Australie un monument de dix mètres de haut et de plus de sept tonnes en forme de mangue. La "Big Mango" (grosse mangue) est l'une des quelque 150 attractions touristiques assez "kitsch", qu'on rencontre en Australie pour signaler une spécialité régionale.
Érigée en 2002 à Bowen, la capitale de la mangue dans l'État du Queensland (nord), la "Big Mango" semble avoir été "récoltée cette nuit avec une certaine audace", a déclaré avec humour le président de l'office du tourisme, Paul McLaughlin. "Il devait être deux heures du matin, il y avait de gros engins et il semble qu'ils aient bien volé la mangue", a-t-il dit à la chaîne ABC.

Paul McLaughlin a raconté qu'il avait d'abord cru qu'on lui racontait des histoires, avant de se rendre à l'évidence sur place. Des caméras de surveillance ont filmé l'opération et, selon le président de l'office du tourisme, le gigantesque fruit ne va pas tarder à être retrouvé.
"Nous ne savons pas vraiment comment cela s'est déroulé, mais je ne ne doute pas qu'on remettra bientôt la main sur cette foutue mangue". "Je suis sûr qu'on la retrouvera avant ce soir" a affirmé le responsable du tourisme dans la région de Bowen. Un peu trop sûr de lui, non? De quoi éveiller les soupçons de la presse anglo saxonne qui a enquêté sur le sujet.
Selon The Independant Australia, aucun vol n'a été déclaré à la police locale. Le journal australien précise aussi qu'une page Facebook a été créée pour l'occasion diffusant en direct l'enquête pour retrouver la mangue géante. Un communiqué de presse a même été diffusé.
Le Guardian Australia a interrogé une agence publicitaire située à Sydney, Banjo Advertising qui mettait en doute la véracité de ce vol.
Un peu partout en Australie, des fruits géants surgissent dans le paysage: une banane géante, un ananas ou une fraise. Il existe aussi des déclinaisons animalières en pingouin, en kangourou, en koala et même en tonneau, dans les contrées viticoles.
