La mine Mouska fermera ses portes à la fin juin à Rouyn-Noranda

Toutes les mines ont une durée de vie limitée. C'est une réalité à laquelle l'industrie minière est bien habituée.

À Rouyn-Noranda, la mine Mouska d'Iamgold fermera ses portes à la fin juin. Elle était en opération depuis 1991. Une longévité enviable dans le monde cyclique de l'économie minière.

Le démantèlement

La cage de la mine Mouska est très occupée ces jours-ci. Elle sert surtout à remonter de la machinerie en pièces détachées puisque, pour fermer les galeries, il faut tout désassembler. La mine Mouska fait 950 mètres de profondeur.

« Il n'y a pas de rampe qui nous permet d'acheminer les équipements sous terre, donc, étant donné que le puits n'est pas tellement grand, les équipements ne peuvent pas passer en un seul morceau », explique le chef aux opérations, Christian Juteau.

D'ici quelques semaines, Iamgold cessera de pomper l'eau. La mine se remplira lentement, jusqu'à ce qu'elle soit inondée.

Survie économique

La mine Mouska avait d'abord été ouverte pour une durée de deux ans. Ses opérations ont constamment été prolongées, mais cette fois, ce n'est plus possible.

« Il fallait vraiment faire une bonne expansion. On n'était pas capables de maintenir une bonne productivité nécessaire pour être rentable », soutient l'ingénieure en chef de la mine Mouska, Émilie Williams.

Le technicien Daniel Côté travaille à la mine Mouska depuis ses débuts. « Ça a changé de compagnie, de propriétaire de mine, ça a changé de direction souvent, se souvient-il. Moi, j'ai survécu à toute la gang. J'ai connu beaucoup de monde, je me suis fait plein d'amis. Vingt-cinq ans à la même place, c'est une vie. »

Bouleversements et nouveaux défis

Depuis 2010, environ une centaine de travailleurs ont été transférés au projet voisin, la mine Westwood. Mais ce ne sont pas tous les employés qui ont eu cette chance. Yves St-Pierre, chef d'équipe du département de mécanique, devra trouver du travail ailleurs.

« Dans les mines, surtout mécanicien, je pense, c'est un bon timing, s'encourage-t-il. Il faut se trouver un emploi. Je sais qu'on va avoir de l'aide à partir des ressources humaines de la mine, mais il faut commencer à faire des recherches. »

« Il faut comprendre les gens qui ont une certaine incertitude, on essaie d'épauler nos gens le mieux possible », souligne Christian Juteau.

Certains travailleurs, plus âgés et moins spécialisés, vivent un plus grand stress. Il s'agit d'un endroit où ils avaient trouvé une seconde famille. « On parle beaucoup de ça. "Toi, as-tu trouvé quelque chose? Qu'est-ce que tu fais? Es-tu inquiet?" Tout le monde se parle, tout le monde est proche, c'est comme une petite famille », affirme Daniel Côté, technicien minier senior à la mine Mouska, qui ira travailler chez Goldcorp.

D'ici quelques semaines, une nouvelle vie commencera pour ces travailleurs. Un bouleversement pour certains, un nouveau défi pour les autres.
