Le sprinteur Andre De Grasse est nommé athlète de l'année de La Presse canadienne

Andre De Grasse nommé athlète de l'année

Ce sourire n'avait pas de prix. Il s'agissait d'un rare moment spontané survenu sous la pression olympique qui entrera dans l'histoire comme l'une des images marquantes des Jeux olympiques de Rio de Janeiro.

Andre De Grasse venait de tenir tête à la vedette jamaïcaine Usain Bolt en demi-finale du 200 mètres et, à quelques mètres du fil d'arrivée, il s'est tourné vers son rival en affichant un large sourire. Le coureur de cinq pieds neuf pouces ressemblait au petit frère qui défiait son ainé de six pieds cinq pouces. Bolt n'a pu se retenir de lui sourire à son tour.

L'épreuve ressemblait à une course entre les deux. Derrière eux, six autres sprinteurs tentaient de garder le rythme.

À ses débuts olympiques et à sa deuxième saison complète seulement, l'athlète de 21 ans a osé défier le plus grand sprinteur de tous les temps, et il a réussi à charmer un pays tout entier.

De Grasse, triple médaillé olympique à Rio, a mérité lundi le prix Lionel-Conacher décerné à l'athlète masculin de l'année de La Presse canadienne.

"J'essaie seulement d'avoir du plaisir quand je suis en compétition parce que je sais à quel point l'entraînement est difficile, a avoué De Grasse. Et il y aura toujours des hauts et des bas dans le sport, mais je dois me rappeler de toujours rester motivé parce que je sais que j'inspire plusieurs personnes. Je veux leur montrer que c'est un sport plaisant, je veux populariser ce sport, surtout au Canada."

Le sprinteur de Markham, en Ontario, a récolté 43 votes - 66 pour cent des voix - au scrutin mené auprès des directeurs des sections sportives du pays.

De Grasse a gagné l'argent au 200 mètres à Rio ainsi que le bronze au 100m et au relais 4x100m.

"À ses tous premiers Jeux, le sprinter a épaté la planète avec ses trois médailles, a rappelé Gilles Carignan, rédacteur en chef du journal Le Soleil. À 21 ans, il s'est imposé comme le grand prétendant au trône d'Usain Bolt, roi sans partage de la discipline. La photo des deux sprinters dominant la piste de Rio demeurera un moment fort de l'athlétisme canadien."

"C'est le gars qui nous a donné le plus de frissons à Rio. Wow!", a pour sa part résumé Patrick White, éditeur et rédacteur en chef du Huffington Post Québec.

Le capitaine des Penguins de Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby, qui a remporté la coupe Stanley et la Coupe du monde en plus d'être nommé joueur par excellence des deux compétitions, a terminé deuxième avec 18 votes - 28 pour cent des voix.

"Sidney Crosby est un athlète incroyable, donc chaque fois que mon nom est mentionné en sa compagnie, c'est une belle reconnaissance, a indiqué De Grasse à partir de Phoenix. Je suis très content d'avoir gagné ce prix."

Le spécialiste du saut en hauteur Derek Drouin, qui a gagné l'or à Rio, a obtenu deux votes tandis que Connor McDavid, des Oilers d'Edmonton, et le joueur de tennis Milos Raonic en ont tous les deux reçu un.

"Lors de n'importe quelle autre année, le prix aurait pu être décerné à Derek Drouin, Milos Raonic, Sidney Crosby ou Joey Votto. Mais Andre De Grasse a réussi quelque chose que nous n'avons pas vu depuis longtemps et il l'a fait avec tellement d'enthousiasme, a écrit Bed Wake, des journaux de Postmedia. Avec Usain Bolt, le meilleur sprinteur de l'histoire, terminer deuxième au 200m, c'était presque aussi bon que l'or."

Ce qui a rendu l'exploit de De Grasse aussi remarquable, selon son entraîneur Stu McMillan, c'est qu'il est survenu à sa deuxième année d'entraînement continu, à la fin d'une saison marquée par plusieurs changements dans sa vie.

Il a fait son entrée chez les professionnels la saison dernière en signant notamment une entente de 11,25 millions $ US avec la compagnie Puma. Il a aussi quitté l'Université Southern California pour déménager à Phoenix pour s'entraîner avec McMillan au sein du programme Altis. Son environnement d'entraînement a changé du tout au tout, lui qui fait désormais partie du même programme qu'environ 100 des meilleurs athlètes au monde.

"Le fait qu'il ait réussi à terminer cette saison malgré tous ces changements, et d'aller gagner trois médailles olympiques ensuite, c'est assez incroyable", a indiqué McMillan.

De Grasse, qui a déjà rêvé de jouer dans la NBA et qui a affronté la vedette des Timberwolves du Minnesota, Andrew Wiggins, dans sa jeunesse a été découvert par l'entraîneur Tony Sharp lors d'une compétition entre écoles secondaires. Il a envoyé un message clair au monde de l'athlétisme en 2015 quand il a gagné les épreuves du 100m et du 200m aux Championnats de la NCAA et aux Jeux panaméricains à Toronto.

Il affiche une certaine naïveté, ce qui l'a aidé à atteindre le podium olympique, selon McMillan.

"Il ne comprend pas vraiment à quel point il est bon et il ne connaît pas très bien le sport. Il ne comprend pas à quel point ce sport est supposé être difficile. C'est une bonne chose, a commenté McMillan. Il est arrivé avec un nouveau regard, je pense. Il m'a beaucoup appris. Je suis habitué à entraîner des athlètes qui pratiquent le sport depuis plusieurs années, qui ont déjà des objectifs et qui savent ce qui est possible. Il est arrivé et a tout fait exploser. C'était assez 'cool'."

De Grasse a récemment complété son baccalauréat en sociologie, respectant la promesse qu'il avait faite à sa mère. Il a célébré sa graduation avec quelques amis à Las Vegas et il est maintenant de retour à l'entraînement à Phoenix avec McMillan en vue de la prochaine saison.

Il affirme que ça lui a pris du temps avant de réaliser l'ampleur de ses réalisations.

"Ça m'a vraiment frappé quand je suis revenu à la maison et que j'ai vu la réaction de plusieurs amateurs qui m'ont vu à Rio. Le fait d'être à la maison à Toronto et de recevoir l'amour des gens peu importe où j'allais, c'est ce qui m'a fait réaliser ce que j'ai accompli, a déclaré De Grasse. Plusieurs personnes croient que je serai le prochain médaillé d'or olympique.

"Je dois me souvenir que même si ces gens me disent ça, je dois continuer de travailler fort pour l'accomplir. Mais c'est bien de voir que ces gens sont fiers et surtout ma famille et mes amis, ils sont très fiers de ce que j'ai accompli en si peu de temps."

Le gardien du Canadien de Montréal, Carey Price, avait remporté le prix l'an dernier. La liste des gagnants de cet honneur remis depuis 1932 est longue et elle inclut Steve Nash et Crosby, qui l'ont gagné trois fois, et Wayne Gretzky, qui l'a reçu en sept occasions. Le sprinteur Donovan Bailey l'avait emporté en 1996.

Le prix Lionel Conacher a été nommé d'après l'athlète polyvalent qui a été sélectionné comme athlète canadien de la première moitié du siècle dernier. La gagnante du trophée Bobbie Rosenfeld remis à l'athlète féminine de l'année au Canada sera dévoilée mardi, et l'équipe de l'année sera annoncée mercredi.
