L'OPEP dit qu'il y a de la place pour les sables bitumineux sur les marchés mondiaux

L'organisation des pays exportateurs de pétrole (OPEP) dit qu'il y a place sur les marchés pétroliers pour les producteurs de pétrole de schiste des États-Unis, les sables bitumineux du Canada et d'autres productions à coûts plus élevés.

L’an dernier, l’organisation avait dit aux producteurs à coûts élevés de sortir du marché.

Les producteurs de pétrole de schiste et des gestionnaires de fonds spéculatifs ont rencontré le secrétaire général de l’OPEP Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo cette semaine à Houston avant le début de la conférence CERAWeek sur l'énergie.

Ils ont discuté des marchés du brut, de la façon de rééquilibrer l’offre et la demande et de comment réduire les grandes quantités de pétrole encore disponible dans les stocks mondiaux. C’est un autre signe que le cartel a capitulé à la suite d’une guerre de prix qu’il n’a jamais admis avoir menée.

Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo a souligné que la demande pour le pétrole est grandissante et il s’attend à ce que l'approvisionnement se resserre au cours des prochaines années. Cela le porte à croire que les sables bitumineux vont jouer un rôle important, surtout si les producteurs continuent d’innover.

« Nous croyons que les sables bitumineux vont continuer d’attirer les investisseurs, surtout avec les nouvelles technologies qui [améliorent les performances environnementales] » ajoute M. Barkindo.

Les producteurs canadiens en mode vente

Les producteurs de sables bitumineux savent qu’ils doivent améliorer la crédibilité environnementale de leur industrie.

« Notre industrie peut compétitionner avec le pétrole léger de schiste. Nous sommes compétitifs en termes de coûts de production et de prix sur le carbone », a déclaré Judy Fairburn, vice-présidente directrice pour l’entreprise de sables bitumineux de Calgary Cenovus, lors d’un petit-déjeuner rassemblant des gens de l’industrie.

« Il y a beaucoup d’opportunités dans notre secteur [...] dans un monde qui veut moins d’émissions de carbone », a-t-elle ajouté.

Mme Fairburn a déclaré que Cenovus vise à réduire ses émissions de gaz à effet de serre de 30 % au cours des dix prochaines années, tout en réduisant ses coûts de production qui sont d’environ 45 $ le baril en ce moment.

« L’industrie pétrolière continue de croître au Canada », estime Kevin Birn, un analyste chez IHS Markit.

« La croissance a été plus modeste dernièrement, mais elle se poursuit. Nous sommes un pays producteur de pétrole et cela ne changera pas dans un avenir prévisible », ajoute-t-il.
