RIO DE JANEIRO - Luis Suarez a dit au comité de discipline de la FIFA qu'il n'a pas voulu mordre le défenseur italien Giorgio Chiellini, à la Coupe du monde.

«Ce n'est pas arrivé du tout comme vous l'avez écrit, comme une morsure ou une intention de mordre», écrit l'attaquant de l'Uruguay en espagnol, dans une lettre datée du 25 juin.

Les explications du joueur sont dans le sixième paragraphe du jugement de la FIFA.

«J'ai perdu l'équilibre après l'impact, ce qui m'a déstabilisé et m'a fait chuter sur mon adversaire, a écrit Suarez. C'est à ce ce moment que mon visage a heurté le joueur, ce qui m'a causé une légère contusion à la joue et une vive douleur aux dents.»

Le comité de sept personnes a toutefois rejeté ses arguments, qualifiant la morsure comme «délibérée, intentionnelle et sans provocation», peut-on lire dans le 26e paragraphe.

Suarez a été suspendu pour neuf matches de l'Uruguay et quatre mois de soccer globalement, en plus de recevoir une amende de 112 000 $.
