La Russe Maria Sharapova a déclaré forfait pour l'édition 2015 de l'US Open.

Une nouvelle qui provoque peu de surprises étant donné qu'elle est absente du circuit féminin depuis Wimbledon.

La raison invoquée est une blessure à la jambe.

La veille, la no 3 mondiale avait indiqué lors d'une conférence de presse à Flushing Meadows que « (ses) ambitions étaient limitées. »

Sharapova n'a plus joué depuis le 9 juillet, date de sa défaite en demi-finale de Wimbledon face à sa grande rivale Serena Williams qu'elle n'a plus battue depuis 2004.

Elle devait initialement participer au tournoi de Toronto, mais avait dû se retirer en raison d'un genou droit douloureux.

Pour son match initial, Sharapova, 28 ans, devait retrouver l'Australienne d'origine russe Daria Gavrilova.

Elle est remplacée dans le tableau féminin par sa compatriote Daria Kasatkina.

Sharapova a remporté Internationaux des États-Unis à une seule reprise en 2006.

Le forfait de Sharapova est une bonne nouvelle pour Serena Williams qui aurait pu la retrouver en demi-finale. La no 1 mondiale espère réaliser à New York le premier Grand Chelem du tennis féminin depuis 1988.
