Dans une cérémonie dimanche au Vatican, le pape François a canonisé Mère Teresa, fondatrice des Missionnaires de la charité en Inde.
La religieuse qui a consacré sa vie aux pauvres et aux plus démunis a été élevée au rang de sainte, 13 ans après avoir été proclamée bienheureuse.
De son vrai nom Agnès Gonxha Bojaxhiu, Mère Teresa est née en 1910 en Macédoine. Elle était entrée chez les religieuses à 18 ans. Elle est décédée à Calcutta le 5 septembre 1997, à 87 ans.
Les milliers de pélerins présents sur la place Saint-Pierre de Rome ont longuement applaudi lorsque le pape a complété la cérémonie de canonisation. Des centaines de religieuses de la congrégation de Mère Teresa ont assisté à la cérémonie, en compagnie de 1500 sans-abri invités à l'événement par le Saint-Père.
Le souverain pontife a salué l'engagement de Mère Teresa pour l'Église et pour "les plus pauvres d'entre les pauvres".
