MONTRÉAL - Environnement Canada a confirmé, mardi soir, qu'une tornade de faible intensité a frappé une portion de la ville ontarienne de New Tecumseth. L'agence étudie également des observations de tornade à la frontière entre le Québec et l'Ontario.

Le secteur de Tottenham, au sud de la municipalité de New Tecumseth, a été balayé par la tornade qui a fait des dommages. Une maison s'est en partie effondrée et plusieurs bâtiments ont été abîmés, a confirmé le Service des incendies de la municipalité de quelque 30 000 résidants.

Environnement Canada a déployé une équipe pour analyser les informations disponibles en journée et analyser la gravité des dommages, ce qui a permis de conclure qu'une tornade avait bel et bien frappé le quartier de Tottenham. En fin de journée, les autorités ne rapportaient aucun blessé en lien avec l'événement.

Le météorologue Peter Kimbell, d'Environnement Canada, a rapporté qu'une ligne d'orages s'était déplacée au nord de Toronto et avait causé des dommages dans plusieurs municipalités. C'est à l'occasion de cet événement météorologique que la tornade de force EF1 aurait pris naissance, a-t-il expliqué.

En soirée, Environnement Canada s'intéressait à un autre événement météorologique, cette fois dans le secteur d'Hawkesbury, une municipalité qui borde la rivière des Outaouais et qui fait face au Québec.

Des internautes ont indiqué avoir observé une tornade sur l'heure du souper. Environnement Canada n'avait pas émis d'alerte dans cette région, mais un avertissement était néanmoins en vigueur pour Casselman, qui se trouve à quelques dizaines de kilomètres de là.

«Il y avait une veille d'orage violent en vigueur, mais il a été déterminé qu'il y avait seulement un nuage en forme d'entonnoir et que le potentiel météorologique n'imposait pas d'alerte», a affirmé M. Kimbell, à l'occasion d'une entrevue avec La Presse Canadienne.

Environnement Canada continuait mardi soir d'analyser les données météorologiques disponibles pour cette région et s'intéressait aux informations transmises en ligne par les internautes.

Le service des incendies d'Hawkesbury n'a pas reçu d'appel d'assistance de la part de citoyens en lien avec une possible tornade, mais son directeur, Ghislain Pigeon, a fait savoir qu'une portion de cette région avait déjà subi les foudres de Dame Nature par le passé.

«Au cours des dernières années, des tornades ont été rapportées dans un secteur rural à proximité de notre municipalité. Des dommages ont déjà été observés dans le secteur de Hawkesbury Est, où se trouvent surtout des fermes. Mais c'est un grand territoire rural, donc il se peut aussi qu'une tornade passe inaperçue et ne fasse aucun dommage», a-t-il indiqué.

Les conditions météorologiques des dernières heures étaient propices pour du temps violent, a souligné M. Kimbell.

«Il y avait une masse d'air chaud et humide avec des températures près de 28 degrés, un humidex jusqu'à 37, en plus d'un front froid qui s'approchait. Tous les ingrédients étaient là pour des orages violents», a expliqué le météorologue.

Un avertissement météorologique était d'ailleurs toujours en vigueur mardi soir pour le secteur de Gatineau, au Québec, où des orages violents et de fortes précipitations étaient attendues.

Au cours des dernières semaines, plusieurs événements météorologiques violents ont été rapportés en Ontario, mais les autorités soulignent que cela n'est pas exceptionnel à ce moment-ci de l'année.

«C'est le temps de l'année où c'est plus probable. La plupart sont de force EF0 ou EF1. Il y a quelques jours, à Angus, c'était cependant une tornade de force EF2. Les tornades sont toujours surprenantes, mais cela arrive», a soutenu le météorologue d'Environnement Canada.

La municipalité d'Angus, située à 35 kilomètres de New Tecumseth, a été frappée par une tornade de force EF2 la semaine dernière. Une centaine de maisons ont subi des dommages.
