Maintenant tirés d'affaire, quatre Canadiens évacués vers l'Inde trouvent du réconfort dans leur expérience commune du tremblement de terre qui a secoué le Népal, la semaine dernière.

Tamara McLeod, une jeune femme de 24 ans de Calgary, en Alberta, se trouvait dans le petit village de Briddim, dans la région de Langtang au nord de la vallée de Katmandou, au moment de la secousse de 7,8 sur l'échelle de Richter.

"Nous étions assis dans une pièce quand la terre a commencé à trembler, raconte-t-elle à La Presse Canadienne, en entrevue téléphonique à partir de la capitale indienne, New Delhi. C'était une maison en pierre et certaines sont tombées du toit, donc nous avons eu à évacuer le bâtiment. Nous étions au deuxième étage, les murs étaient en train de s'affaisser et le plafond s'effondrait."

Mme McLeod ajoute que la plupart des maisons du village ont été détruites par la première secousse et qu'il était "invivable et dangereux" de s'en approcher au cours des répliques sismiques, qui se sont poursuivies durant près de cinq jours.

"Un espèce de camp temporaire a été installé dans un champ en contrebas du village, donc tout le monde dormait dans des tentes, dit-elle. J'ai dormi sur une bâche sur le sol, sous un abri qui sert habituellement à une vache."

La jeune femme y est demeurée quatre jours, jusqu'à ce qu'un hélicoptère l'évacue, avec quelques autres personnes, vers la ville voisine de Dhuncle. À partir de là, elle a dû marcher durant sept heures sur une route très endommagée pour atteindre un endroit d'où elle a pu prendre un autobus en direction de Katmandou.

Une fois dans la capitale népalaise, elle a été évacuée vers New Delhi par un avion militaire des Forces armées canadiennes. Elle estime qu'une vingtaine d'autres Canadiens ont pris les airs en même temps qu'elle. Elle a sympathisé avec trois d'entre eux et le quatuor a décidé de demeurer ensemble en Inde.

"Nous demeurons tous au même endroit à New Delhi, tels quatre réfugiés canadiens, explique-t-elle. Pouvoir discuter de cette expérience avec eux est vraiment une bonne chose. Ils comprennent."

Tamara McLeod affirme que le quatuor prévoit faire du bénévolat à l'ambassade du Népal à New Delhi au cours des prochains jours, entre autres en donnant un coup de main pour préparer les envois de matériel d'urgence qui seront acheminés à travers le Népal.

La Canadienne, qui s'estime "en état de choc", ne sait pas encore combien de temps elle demeurera en Inde. Elle prévoit cependant retourner au Népal à un moment ou un autre pour prêter main-forte à ceux qui l'ont aidé à la suite du tremblement de terre.
