Quatrième défaite consécutive pour Eugénie Bouchard à la Fed Cup

La première journée de la rencontre de barrage du Groupe mondial de la Fed Cup entre le Canada et la Roumanie n'a pas respecté la logique.

Les négligées de chaque équipe ont créé la surprise, samedi, et la confrontation est égale 1-1 à l'issue des deux premiers simples disputés à l'aréna Maurice-Richard.

La jeune Montréalaise Françoise Abanda, âgée de 18 ans, a d'abord remporté sa plus importante victoire jusqu'ici en carrière. Elle a pris la mesure d'Irina-Camelia Begu, la no 1 Roumaine et 33e raquette mondiale, en trois manches de 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, à l'issue d'une longue lutte de près de deux heures et 40 minutes.

Cette victoire quelque peu inattendue augurait bien pour l'équipe canadienne puisque Eugenie Bouchard, septième joueuse mondiale, affrontait Alexandra Dulgheru, 69e au classement féminin, lors du deuxième simple de la journée.

C'était sans compter sur la performance inspirée de la Roumaine, qui a triomphé en deux manches de 6-4, 6-4.

Tout se jouera donc lors de la deuxième journée de cette confrontation dont l'enjeu est une place dans le Groupe mondial I en 2016.

Bouchard doit affronter Begu dans le premier simple de la journée tandis que Abanda est censée rencontrer Dulgheru. Le double pourrait donc être déterminant et, si c'est le cas, les formations initialement annoncées seront sans doute modifiées. Au départ, les capitaines avaient prévu opposer les Ontariennes Sharon Fichman et Gabriela Dabrowski aux Roumaines Andreea Mitu et Raluca Olaru.

Abanda, qui occupe actuellement le 260e rang au classement WTA, a démontré beaucoup de combativité pendant son match, surtout au troisième set après avoir été victime d'un bris d'entrée de jeu.

« Cette victoire est très spéciale pour moi, surtout ici à Montréal devant ma famille, mes amis et nos partisans, a-t-elle confié. Begu est bien mieux classée que moi sur papier et elle était censée me battre. Je suis contente de constater que je peux rivaliser contre des filles de haut niveau. C'est une victoire qui va me donner confiance, surtout que je n'ai pas gagné beaucoup de matchs dernièrement. Ça va m'aider pour les tournois à venir. »

Si l'issue de la rencontre est longtemps restée indécise, c'est en raison des nombreuses erreurs des deux joueuses, Begu a commis 59 fautes directes contre 53 pour sa rivale.

Au final, la Roumaine s'est montrée plus brouillonne, maintenant un faible 48 pour cent de réussite sur sa première balle de service contre 63 pour cent pour Abanda et totalisant cinq doubles fautes.

Begu a semblé se blesser à la jambe gauche (contracture musculaire) lors du troisième jeu de la troisième manche. Elle a d'ailleurs bénéficié d'une pause médicale lors du changement de côté, mais elle a refusé de s'en servir comme excuse pour expliquer sa défaite.

« Elle a démontré beaucoup d'agressivité et ne m'a pas permis de déployer mon jeu, a-t-elle décrit au sujet de la performance d'Abanda. Elle se déplace bien sur le court et elle a un bel avenir devant elle. »

Pour Abanda, qui a vécu son baptême avec l'équipe canadienne de la Fed Cup en février dernier à Québec, il s'agit d'une première victoire dans cette compétition par équipe.

Une victoire ce week-end permettrait aux Canadiennes de conserver leur place parmi les huit meilleures nations au monde l'année prochaine. L'équipe perdante sera quant à elle reléguée au Groupe mondial II.
