Un nouveau livre, Crazy Town, publié lundi sur le maire de Toronto laisse entendre qu'il est un accro des drogues dures comme le crack depuis au moins 2006.
Rob Ford aurait alors été bouleversé par la mort de son père, selon l'auteure du livre, la journaliste du Toronto Star Robyn Doolittle.
La reporter d'enquête a été l'une des rares personnes à avoir vu la fameuse vidéo du maire en train de fumer du crack et à avoir écrit sur le sujet en mai dernier.
Cet enregistrement est à l'origine du scandale qui secoue jusqu'à ce jour l'Hôtel de Ville de Toronto.
Le maire Ford a admis en novembre dernier avoir déjà fumé du crack, il y a « environ un an ». Il a toutefois nié être un toxicomane ou un alcoolique.
Mais, citant des sources anonymes, Robyn Doolittle allègue dans son livre que ses problèmes de dépendance remontent à beaucoup plus loin.
Selon la journaliste, après l'élection de Rob Ford à la mairie en 2010, sa femme a fait part de ses inquiétudes à un ex-toxicomane, qui a enregistré la conversation à son insu.
Renata Ford a nié avoir eu une telle conversation, selon l'avocat de Rob Ford.
Figure de proue
Les enfants de la famille Ford, y compris Rob Ford et le conseiller municipal Doug Ford, vouaient un très grand respect à leur père, Doug père.
Ce dernier était un député provincial sous le chef conservateur Mike Harris dans les années 90. Il était aussi un homme d'affaires; il a fondé une importante imprimerie de Toronto, qui a aussi un bureau à Chicago.
Le maire se décrit comme le défenseur de la classe ouvrière, mais il a grandi dans l'abondance à Etobicoke, dans l'ouest de Toronto. Rob Ford doit rentrer à Toronto lundi soir, après des vacances à Vancouver. Son bureau s'est refusé à tout commentaire.
