MOSCOU - Des milliers de personnes ont défilé mardi devant le cercueil du dissident russe Boris Nemtsov, qui a été abattu en pleine rue vendredi soir dans des circonstances qui demeurent nébuleuses.

Aucun suspect n'a encore été arrêté.

M. Nemtsov, un ancien vice-premier ministre de Boris Eltsine, comptait parmi les détracteurs les plus virulents du Kremlin et du président Vladimir Poutine. L'homme de 55 ans était vu comme un jeune réformateur en pleine ascension.

Le meurtre a fortement ébranlé la petite dissidence russe. Plusieurs opposants du régime croient que l'assassinat a été ordonné par le gouvernement, possiblement pour empêcher M. Nemtsov de dévoiler des informations compromettantes. Les autorités évoquent d'autres hypothèses, comme un éventuel complot pour ternir la réputation du président Poutine.

La file de gens qui désiraient saluer M. Nemtsov une dernière fois s'étirait sur plusieurs centaines de mètres à moins d'une heure de la fermeture prévue des portes.

Son corps était exposé en chapelle ardente au Centre Sakharov, au coeur de Moscou, du nom du dissident soviétique et lauréat du prix Nobel de la paix Andreï Sakharov. Les funérailles et l'inhumation sont prévues d'ici la fin de la journée.

L'ambassadeur américain John Tefft et l'ancien premier ministre Mikhail Kasayanov, qui a maintenant rejoint les rangs de l'opposition, se sont rendus sur place. Les médias russes rapportent aussi la présence des vice-premiers ministres Sergeï Prikhodko et Arkadi Dvorkovich, et de la veuve de M. Eltsine, Naïna.

Plusieurs observateurs ont souligné que M. Nemtsov, comme d'autres dissidents, était constamment suivi la police, et qu'il serait donc étonnant que son meurtre soit passé inaperçu.
