BROSSARD, Qc - P.K. Subban dit se foutre éperdument d'être le point de mire des Bruins et de toute la ville de Boston. On soupçonne le défenseur étoile du Canadien de retirer une satisfaction particulière de recevoir tant d'attention, même comme souffre-douleur.

«Que j'apprécie ça, ou que je l'accepte, n'a aucune importance parce que ça ne dicte aucunement ma façon de jouer, ni celle de l'équipe, a affirmé Subban, lundi.

«Si on tente de me déconcentrer, ça veut dire que je dois faire quelque chose de bien», a-t-il enchaîné, en anticipant l'accueil hostile que la foule du TD Garden lui réservera.

Subban se défend quant à lui de cibler le pugnace attaquant Brad Marchand, avec lequel il en a maintes fois décousu ces dernières années.

«Les gens vont décortiquer les matchs et dire qu'un tel joueur tente de piquer au vif un autre. Ça ne fait pas partie de mon jeu, a-t-il répondu. J'estime que c'est quand je joue bien, que je marque des buts, que je préconise un style physique ou que j'ai une influence positive sur le déroulement d'un match, que je fais davantage suer mes adversaires.

«Brad Marchand et moi avons gagné le championnat du monde junior ensemble. Je n'ai rien contre lui, et il vous dirait la même chose si vous lui posiez la question. Nous voulons tous deux qu'une seule chose: gagner.»

Michel Therrien se demande si les partisans des Bruins aideront la cause du Canadien, en prenant à partie Subban.

«Zdeno Chara va possiblement recevoir le même traitement que Subban à Montréal, a noté l'entraîneur. Est-ce que ça peut aider la cause des Bruins? C'est difficile pour moi de répondre à ces questions.»

Peu importe, Subban a le sentiment de bien faire contre les Bruins depuis son arrivée dans la ligue, il y a quatre ans, et il veut que ça continue.

«Ça m'emballe de jouer en séries parce que l'enjeu est important, a-t-il déclaré. On dirait que plus la scène est grande, mieux je joue. Et, habituellement, plus je joue meilleur je suis. En séries, tout est une question de vie ou de mort. Je suis concentré à 100 pour cent dans ce temps-là, et je suis à mon mieux.»

Subban a hâte de passer de la parole aux actes et que la rivalité entre les deux équipes se transporte sur la patinoire.

«Tout ce qui comptera, ce sera la victoire. Après, on reparlera encore de la rivalité.»

Le défenseur prédit une longue et éprouvante 34e série entre les deux grands rivaux, au grand plaisir des amateurs.

«Je m'attends à ce que les Bruins soient à leur mieux. On dirait qu'ils sont lents à se mettre en marche au premier tour des séries, mais ils embraient en cinquième vitesse au deuxième tour.»

Parlant comme si ses troupiers ne souffriront d'aucun complexe, Therrien a parlé d'une série qui sera «chaudement disputée» et d'une «véritable guerre de tranchées» contre «l'équipe championne de la ligue en saison régulière». Ce sera pour lui un deuxième chapitre de la rivalité, après avoir été à la barre du CH en 2002, quand l'équipe l'avait emporté en six matchs.

Mauvais souvenir

Subban a gardé un goût amer en bouche de la défaite en sept matchs, en prolongation de surcroît, que les Bruins ont infligée au CH la dernière fois que les deux équipes ont croisé le fer en séries, au printemps de 2011. D'autant que les Bruins ont remporté la Coupe Stanley, un mois et demi plus tard.

«Pour plusieurs d'entre nous, c'est une occasion de se racheter, a-t-il avancé. Les Bruins ne l'ont pas volé, ils méritaient la victoire dans le septième match. Mais nous étions animés du même sentiment. Nous étions simplement tombés à court contre l'équipe qui a par la suite gagné la coupe.»

Subban a dit avoir surtout retenu de la douloureuse expérience qu'il n'y a jamais rien d'acquis, même quand on remporte les deux premiers matchs d'une série à l'étranger.

«Toutes les présences sur la glace sont importantes et n'importe quelle équipe peut être battue», a-t-il ajouté.

«Cela dit, les Bruins sont une bien meilleure équipe qu'il y a trois ans, c'est mon opinion. Ce sera une série encore plus ardue. Nous ne nous rendrons pas là-bas en croyant que nous reviendrons avec une avance de 2-0 dans la série. Nous savons que ce ne sera pas une partie de plaisir et que ce sera très différent de la dernière fois.»
