Sports Illustrated fait de Serena Williams son choix comme personnalité en 2015

La personnalité de l'année selon Sports Illustrated est une femme

NEW YORK — Le magazine Sports Illustrated a attribué le titre de personnalité sportive de l'année à Serena Williams. Elle devient ainsi la première femme à recevoir seule cette mention du magazine en plus de 30 ans.

Williams est venue à deux victoires près de réaliser le premier Grand Chelem du tennis la même année depuis 1988, tentative qui a pris fin par une défaite en demi-finale des Internationaux des États-Unis.

En 2015, l'Américaine de 34 ans a compilé un palmarès de 53-3, dont cinq titres, incluant ceux aux Internationaux d'Australie, Roland-Garros et Wimbledon. Williams a occupé le premier rang du classement WTA pendant toute la saison.

« Elle est la personne la plus méritante pour cet honneur. Elle a connu une année incroyable. La façon dont elle a remporté ses tournois; le fait qu'elle a conservé un niveau aussi élevé pendant de nombreuses années, a expliqué le rédacteur en chef de Sports Illustrated, Paul Fichtenbaum. Elle était la candidate par excellence parmi des candidats excellents cette année. »

L'annonce de cette année marque un changement dans la nomination officielle de l'honneur décerné par Sports Illustrated. Les anciens lauréats étaient présentés comme le sportif et la sportive de l'année.

« Nous avons pensé que c'était une évolution naturelle. (...) Nous ne faisons pas grand cas de ce changement, a confié Fichtenbaum. Nous croyons seulement que c'était le bon moment pour le faire. »

L'athlète de demi-fond Mary Decker était la dernière femme, en 1983, à mériter seule cette mention.

L'équipe américaine de football féminin avait été le choix du magazine en 1999; la patineuse de vitesse Bonnie Blair en 1994 et la gymnaste Mary Lou Retton en 1984 avaient partagé l'honneur avec des Olympiens masculins.

« Les sports masculins ont dominé jusqu'à récemment, quand le sport féminin a gagné en popularité, et la compétition est meilleure que jamais, a conclu Fichtenbaum. Le sport féminin attire désormais plus d'attention. Il a connu un essor considérable. Précisément pourquoi? Je ne sais pas exactement. »
