TORONTO - La ville de Toronto a dit au revoir aux Jeux panaméricains de brillante façon, dimanche, avec une cérémonie de clôture de grande envergure.

Les chiffres parlent d'eux-mêmes: 510 bénévoles dans la distribution, plus de 500 costumes, plus de 3000 verges de tissu et 6456 chaises pliantes pour permettre aux athlètes de s'asseoir et d'apprécier le spectacle.

Près de 40 000 spectateurs se sont entassés dans les gradins du Rogers Centre pour saluer les athlètes une dernière fois. La prestation de Kanye West et de spectaculaires feux d'artifice provenant de la Tour du CN ont mis un point d'exclamation final à près de trois semaines d'activités et de compétitions.

La scène - plusieurs scènes connectées par un réseau de couloirs - était assombrie par des colonnes de 20 mètres qui devaient dépeindre les immenses gratte-ciels de Toronto.

La diversité de la capitale ontarienne a inspiré les maîtres d'oeuvre de la cérémonie, quand des dizaines de danseurs ont envahi la scène en effectuant des mouvements variés, que l'on pouvait associer à une communauté différente de la population torontoise.

Des acrobates effectuant des mouvements de capoeira ont été soulevés dans les airs alors que les spécialistes chinois du tai chi se sont synchronisés afin de former un dragon. D'autres danses tape-à-l'oeil ont dépeint les Premières Nations, les Caraïbes, les Philippines, l'Irlande et l'Argentine, tout cela grâce à d'énergiques danseurs modernes.

Même s'il régnait une ambiance de fête, le spectacle de trois heures a quand même été ponctué d'autant de discours que la cérémonie d'ouverture menée de main de maître par le Cirque du Soleil, qui avait attiré environ 45 000 personnes.

Au total, il y en a eu trois, soit ceux du président directeur général des Jeux, Saad Rafi, du maire de Toronto, John Tory, et du vice-président de l'Organisation sportive panaméricaine, Ivar Sisniega.

L'entrée des drapeaux et la parade des nations se sont au moins déroulés dans une ambiance beaucoup plus festive que lors de la cérémonie d'ouverture, tandis que la joueuse de l'équipe de basketball médaillée d'or, Kia Nurse, portait le drapeau canadien.

La cérémonie de passation du drapeau, le transfert symbolique de la responsabilité de l'organisation des Panam de 2019 à la ville hôtesse de Lima, a été effectuée par la suite. Le segment a été suivi par une mise en scène mettant en vedette un jeune péruvien se promenant autour du monde sur le dos d'un alpaga. La séquence s'est conclue quand plus de 100 danseurs se sont mis à danser au son de la chanson "Carnaval", du groupe péruvien La Sarita.

Comme prévu, Serena Ryder, Pitbull et West ont ponctué la cérémonie de performances vocales hautes en couleurs.

Accueilli chaudement par la foule, West a livré une longue prestation de ses meilleurs succès jusqu'à ce que son micro ne vienne jouer les trouble-fête. Le rappeur a bien essayé de terminer sa dernière chanson malgré les problèmes, mais il a abandonné en lançant le micro dans les airs tout en quittant la scène.

La foule a alors scandé "Kanye! Kanye!" jusqu'à ce que les feux d'artifice ne viennent clôturer la cérémonie.
