Douglas Garland, accusé d'avoir tué le jeune Nathan O'Brien et ses grands-parents, a brièvement comparu par vidéoconférence au palais de justice de Calgary, et devra se présenter de nouveau devant le tribunal le 14 août.
Au cours d'une courte audience de quatre minutes, la Couronne a demandé plus de temps pour évaluer le dossier de l'accusé.
L'homme de 54 ans doit notamment répondre à deux chefs d'accusation de meurtre au premier degré à l'endroit d'Alvin et Kathryn Liknes ainsi qu'à une accusation de meurtre au deuxième degré de leur petit fils de 5 ans, Nathan O'Brien.
Douglas Garland a été arrêté dans la nuit de dimanche à lundi dans la région d'Airdrie.
Selon la police, les enquêteurs ont réuni suffisamment de preuves pour traduire Douglas Garland devant la justice, même s'ils sont toujours à la recherche des corps des deux grands-parents et de leur petit-fils, disparus mystérieusement de leur domicile de Calgary depuis le 29 juin dernier.
Vague de soutien aux proches des victimes
En guise de soutien à la famille et aux proches des victimes, des citoyens de Calgary se sont rassemblés mardi soir pour un lancer symbolique de ballons à la mémoire des trois victimes de cette sombre affaire. Certains n'hésitent pas à participer aux fouilles pour tenter de retrouver les corps.
À la sortie du tribunal, le fils d'Alvin Liknes, Allen, a remercié ces personnes pour leur soutien.

Nous espérons grâce à cette nouvelle reconstitution obtenir de nouvelles informations qui pourraient nous permettre de relancer le dossier.\n
