OTTAWA - Le ministre fédéral de la Sécurité publique, Steven Blaney, a déclaré que la fusillade survenue à Moncton l'incitait à sévir contre les armes illégales — même s'il avoue ne pas savoir si celles utilisées par le tueur étaient légales ou non.

Le ministre répondait jeudi aux questions des journalistes à Ottawa alors qu'il traçait le bilan de session des accomplissements du gouvernement Harper.

Il a ainsi été questionné pour savoir si la récente tuerie, qui a coûté la vie à trois policiers de la GRC et en a blessé deux autres, avait alimenté sa réflexion sur le contrôle des armes à feu.

Car c'est son gouvernement qui a aboli le registre des armes d'épaule en 2012. Celui-ci avait été créé après la tuerie de la Polytechnique en 1989, lors de laquelle 14 femmes ont été assassinées.

«Eh bien, vous savez, j'ai eu l'opportunité de déposer une couronne de fleurs — Moncton est encore très présent dans nos coeurs et dans nos esprits», a-t-il commencé par dire.

«Et elle (la fusillade) nous rappelle l'importance comme gouvernement de toujours mettre en place des mesures efficaces pour lutter contre la criminalité et faire en sorte que nous vivions dans une société où on puisse justement vivre en paix et être à l'abri de ces criminels-là», a poursuivi M. Blaney.

Pressé de commenter spécifiquement le contrôle des armes, il a indiqué que la tuerie renforçait sa «conviction qu'il est important de mettre en place des mesures efficaces pour lutter contre la dispersion des armes qui circulent de manière illégale».

Mais tout de suite après, il avouait ne pas savoir si les armes en cause étaient légales ou non, en précisant que l'enquête policière suivait son cours.

Selon certaines informations ayant circulé dans les médias, les armes que transportait le tueur Justin Bourque pouvaient être acquises légalement au pays.

La GRC a refusé jeudi de confirmer si les armes utilisées pour abattre les policiers étaient légales ou non. L'homme n'a toutefois pas été accusé de possession illégale d'armes à feu. D'autres accusations pourraient cependant être portées contre lui ultérieurement.

De toute façon, le problème est loin d'être limité aux armes illégales, a affirmé Heidi Rathjen en réponse aux propos du ministre Blaney.

Pour cette survivante de Polytechnique, qui milite depuis pour le contrôle des armes, il est difficile de commenter les meurtres à Moncton tant que les détails sur les armes utilisées pour abattre les policiers ne seront pas connus.

Mais elle déplore toutefois que les conservateurs aient autant détruit l'encadrement juridique autour des armes, qui peut minimiser les risques qu'un tel massacre se reproduise.

Elle se désole aussi que des armes d'assaut soient légales au pays.

«Pourquoi vendre des armes qui permettent de percer des gilets pare-balle?», demande-t-elle, puisque celles-ci ne sont pas nécessaires pour la chasse. «Et cela augmente les risques pour les policiers.»

En abolissant le registre des armes d'épaule, le gouvernement Harper a enlevé aux policiers l'outil qui leur permettait de confisquer les fusils et d'empêcher les ventes illégales, a-t-elle ajouté.
