Une drôle d'installation place Vendôme à Paris étonne les passants et commence à faire parler d'elle dans la presse étrangère. Officiellement, il s'agit d'une sculpture contemporaine de 24 mètres représentant un arbre de Noël mais le reste du monde y voit un jouet sexuel et plus précisément un «plug anal».

Créée spécialement pour la place par l'artiste américain Paul McCarthy, cette œuvre gonflable s'intitule simplement Tree . La sculture éphèmère a été érigée jeudi 16 octobre à l'occasion de la Foire internationale d'art contemporain et d'une exposition sur Paul McCarthy à la Monnaie de Paris.

Depuis son installation, plusieurs messages ont fait leur apparition sur les réseaux sociaux pour faire remarquer la ressemblance de cet "arbre" avec un jouet sexuel.

La sculpture a rapidement attiré l'attention de médias à l'étranger qui s'amusent de cette présence en plein Paris. "Plug anal ou art? La dernière œuvre de Paul McCarthy ressemble à un sex-toy", s'interroge le quotidien britannique Metro. Dans un sondage publié sur l'édition britannique du Huffington Post, une grande majorité des lecteurs pensent qu'il s'agit bel et bien d'un jouet sexuel.

"Un sex-toy géant et gonflable à Paris est sensé être un arbre de Noël", titre également outre-Manche le prestigieux The Indepedent.

"Paris humilié par un plug anal géant et gonflable", titre par ailleurs le site américain Jezebel.

L'artiste agressé

La presse étrangère s'amuse mais l'arbre de Paul McCarthy ne fait pas rire tout le monde. Le mouvement sur les réseaux sociaux a d'ailleurs commencé par un tweet outré du Printemps Français, mouvement politique composé d'identitaire et de catholiques traditionalistes.

Paul McCarthy, 69 ans, a également été agressé pendant l'installation de l'œuvre jeudi, comme le rapporte le journal Le Monde qui était aux côtés de l'artiste à ce moment-là:

"Il est alors presque 14 heures, et Paul McCarthy est agressé par un homme qui le frappe trois fois au visage en hurlant qu’il n’est pas français et que son œuvre n’a rien à faire sur cette place, avant de partir en courant. Les personnes qui assistent à la scène sont sidérées. "Cela arrive souvent ce genre de chose en France…?", nous demande l’artiste, choqué et déstabilisé, mais pas blessé."

Avant d'être agressé, l'artiste a donné sa vision de l'œuvre au Monde: "Tout est parti d’une plaisanterie: à l’origine, je trouvais que le plug anal avait une forme similaire aux sculptures de Brancusi. Après, je me suis rendu compte que cela ressemblait à un arbre de Noël. Mais c’est une œuvre abstraite. Les gens peuvent être offensés s’ils veulent se référer au plug, mais pour moi, c’est plus proche d’une abstraction."
