Bertha Alvarez Manninen

Teacher, philosopher, writer, mother

Bertha Alvarez Manninen is an associate professor of philosophy at Arizona State University. She teaches philosophy of religion, applied ethics, medical ethics, philosophy and film, and religion/philosophy in literature. Her main areas of research are applied ethics and philosophy of religion, and she has published numerous articles and books in these areas.

Born in Miami to Cuban parents, Prof. Manninen is eternally grateful for the gifts given to her by her heritage, and the opportunities provided to her by her education. She attended high school at Miami Senior High, received two bachelor's degrees from Florida International University (in Philosophy and English Literature), a Master's degree in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, and her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Purdue University.

She has two beautiful daughters, a loving and supportive husband, fantastic friends, and a family that keeps her grounded. She is thankful to God for it all, and she is blessed beyond measure.

She is also an immensely huge Disney fan.
