SNAP

While the improvements to the quality of foods provided by our child nutrition programs is a strong step forward, there are two shortfalls to the legislation that the House should consider before taking up the Senate bill.
Right now, adequate funding for a crucial safety net for millions of low-income Americans is at risk. Today senators will decide whether to provide assistance to states for Medicaid and teacher funding or to protect SNAP benefits.
Now that improvements to the child health safety net are in place, the critical next step is to make sure children are actually enrolled in the programs: two-thirds of uninsured children are already eligible but not enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP.
Tonight as the President speaks I'll be listening and hoping that the President agrees that the best way through these times is by pursuing opportunity for all.
