A West Australian university is investigating how a severed pig head was found in an on-campus prayer facility toilet, labeling it "an unprecedented display of Islamophobia".

University of Western Australia PHD scholar Majdi Fal took to Facebook to say how he found the offensive scene, saying "as soon as I opened the toilet's door, I found a dead pig's head inside".

"Needless to say, if this happened at a university, then things are escalating," Fal said in the post.

Most Islamic people do not eat pork, as the Quran forbids it, and the head was placed in a Turkish toilet where pre-prayer ablution is carried out.

"It's not because it was a pig's head -- it can be anything, any other animal -- it was the message that was clear," he told the ABC.

The university students guild took to Facebook to condemn the act, describing it as "deeply damaging and offensive".

"Acts like this are designed only to incite religious and racial hatred," the post said.
