6 Tips For Beating Your Procrastination Delay Tactics

Procrastination is a fact of life. We all do it, and we usually stress about it. Even as we let ourselves become sidetracked with other activities, the anxiety remains. This self-sabotaging behavior not only wastes our time, but research shows it leads to higher levels of stress and lower well-being.

Procrastination is a fact of life. We all do it, and we usually stress about it. Even as we let ourselves become sidetracked with other activities, the anxiety remains. This self-sabotaging behavior not only wastes our time, but research shows it leads to higher levels of stress and lower well-being.

Often, getting started is simply a matter of making a conscious choice to dive in. Implementing action strategies instead of wasting energy on excuses and guilt can get you past your own inertia. The six tips below can clear the way for action.

1. Schedule the task you need to do on your calendar and add an alert. Often we postpone important actions because they're not right in front of us. Designating a specific date and time to devote to the job -- and sticking to it -- can move things along. Also, remember to schedule difficult tasks during your daily high-energy phases, and easy ones during periods of low or moderate energy.

2. Make sure your workplace is well-organized, and reduce physical distractions. Missing items or information often cause inaction. Assemble what you need before settling down to work. Also, keep your visual field as uncluttered as possible, even if you think it's not a big deal. Clutter can negatively affect productivity. Certain sounds, too, can be especially disruptive. In open office plans, you often have little power over your working environment, but make sure not to add distractions of your own making.

3. Start with the easiest step and reward yourself when finished. Usually, even the most onerous tasks have some simple element. Start with the easiest and least offensive piece to get into the flow. If you strongly dislike the chore you're delaying, you can balance the scale with something positive. Rewarding yourself for finishing a difficult or hated task is one of the best ways to offset a positive with a negative. Rewards that are immediate and meaningful have the greatest impact.

4. If fears cause delays, acknowledge them and get to their roots. Facing difficult emotions can be uncomfortable, but it's essential to acknowledge them if you want to move from inaction to action. The more precisely you can pinpoint what triggers the fear, the easier it is to distinguish between real and imaginary issues. Recognizing fabricated anxieties and countering them with objective information and rational thought can break the spell.

Fear of failure is one of the leading causes of procrastination. Whenever fear paralyses your efforts, remind yourself of your past successes. Find assurance in your ability to accomplish past goals effectively.

5. When resentment gets in your way, make peace with the situation. Often, delaying action is a tactic for getting back at somebody you feel is controlling or treating you as their inferior. As with other passive-aggressive behaviours, procrastination usually backfires by making you look bad or heating up the power struggle. A proactive approach is always preferable. Controlling your anger and tactfully communicating what's bothering you is by far the best way to resolve an impasse. When that isn't an option, completing the required work as quickly as possible will lessen the strain and allow you to get back to the things you enjoy.

6. Turn off digital distractions (except calendar alerts). When a task triggers procrastination, it's important to minimize easy access to distractions. One of the greatest culprits is your smartphone. The lure of the latest news or gossip is often stronger than your self-control. Make it easier on yourself to be productive -- turn it off whenever possible.

Nothing says success like counter-sabotaging oneself... really!If anything, by giving yourself a fake early deadline, you'll at least buy yourself some breathing room after you have that inevitable panic-induced breakdown, the one you'll suffer once you reach that final hour only to realize you haven't finished what you should have.
If you know that you are driven by deadlines, make up a fake one. Set a due date for yourself a week before the actual due date. Make sure that all of your calendars and agendas display the fake date so that you’ll have a constant reminder for yourself.

Sit down and make a list of all the things you NEED to do. Not the things you WANT to do, just the things you have to do. Look at the due dates for each of those “need to do” items and map out the ideal times to complete each task.

Master this skill and you'll be able to use it in countless other facets of your life. Take each challenge, goal or project, break it down into smaller parts and commit yourself to finishing each one of those consecutive parts.
Once you’ve created your “need to do list” set small goals for each item. Be sure to assign due dates for each task and make sure that you’re breaking each item down into its smaller, but necessary parts.

Leave them there. Don’t look. Fight the temptation. FB and Twitter can be rewards for you to reach towards AFTER you’ve completed your homework. All of the updates that your friends are posting will STILL BE THERE after you’ve handed in your assignment.

It's so easy, isn't it? Reaching over to that wonderous piece of tech that immediately brings friends into your proverbial social circle, that automatically brings you face to face with all that juicy gossip, and that so instantly provides that so-temporary sweet embrace that only procrastination can bring.
Don’t spend your time texting with your friends. Don’t snap chat your roommate photos of you looking at your text book. Pretend that it’s the late ‘90s and that your phone is only capable of two things: 1) phoning people (they do still have that ability) and 2) displaying the time.

Find and put within reach all the information and tools you will need to get your project done. Consider that the first small part towards achieving your greater goal.

What time do you usually start to work on it? How much time do you usually spend on it? Etc. You will likely find that you’ve established a pattern for yourself and may have even convinced yourself that you HAVE to procrastinate because you get better grades when you do… but if you ALWAYS procrastinate then you owe it to yourself to see what would happen if you were to start your work in advance. You’ll likely find that you’ll be less stressed, will have more coherent assignments to submit, and more sleep to enjoy.

Who doesn't know that impulse purchases are a bad idea? I've even realized it was a bad idea as I was doing it. So here are three quick tips: 1. Make a shopping list. Take it with you and stick to it. 2. Eat beforehand. An empty stomach can doom the most prepared shopper, especially at the supermarket. 3. Shop alone. Consumer Reports says the average person spends $600 a year on wireless service. But many people pay for services they never use. Now that coupons are available online, you're wasting money if you're not using them. Do a quick coupon search before you buy anything, including clothes, groceries, and electronics. Unless your car requires premium fuel, you don't need it. Buying premium isn't going to extend the life of your car or give you a significant MPG boost. In fact, Edmunds studied cars built from 2008 to 2012 and found that many models didn't even need premium fuel - even though the manufacturer recommended it. Here's what they had to say about it:
In today's automobiles, advances in engine technology mean that even if the owner's manual recommends premium gasoline, the car will typically run on regular without knocking. Its performance will suffer only slightly: Perhaps it might be a half-second slower from zero to 60 mph. The key for drivers is to know whether premium gasoline is merely recommended or if it's required.

21. Not Taking Advantage Of A 401(K) Company Match(30 of50)

Some online or over-the-phone bill payment services come with fees. For example, my electric company charges $2.95 to pay online through their website. Instead, I use free bill pay through my bank. I still get to pay online, but I skip the fee and save $35.40 a year. (credit:Flickr: kalleboo)

Automatic withdrawals make us lazy with our money. If you're paying for something each month - like a gym membership, magazine subscription, or streaming service - make sure you use it, or those charges will add up to wasted cash. For example, here are mine:
1. Gym membership - $29.99 per month
2. Netflix subscription - $9.99 per month
3. Popular Mechanics subscription - $1 per month
That's more than $40 a month. I make sure I get my money's worth out of them.

Growing up, I got several lectures on leaving the lights on or keeping the front door open and "air conditioning the entire neighborhood." I didn't care too much then because I didn't pay the bill, but now I'm strict with my electricity usage. The result: My summer utility bills rarely top $100. I like to have a nice meal out every once in a while, but I've wasted a ton of money eating fast food I didn't really want because I didn't plan ahead. If I hit the drive-thru twice a week, I spend $12 on average. That is $48 a month - or enough for a really nice meal I actually wanted.

In my area, a Grande Caramel Macchiato costs $4.55. Buy one every weekday and you'll spend $22.75 a week, $91 a month, and $1,092 a year. By comparison, a 16 ounce bag of coffee costs me $5.99 and I can make about 82 cups per bag. That is 7 cents per cup, a savings of $4.48 a day. Many popular software programs have free alternatives that are just as good as the paid versions. For example, the free OpenOffice suite includes word processing software. Most wireless plans include free long distance. If you call during off-peak hours, you won't use your minutes, either. You can also make long-distance calls over your Internet connection with Skype and Google Voice - both services offer free state-to-state calls. You'll pay up to $35 to check your luggage when you fly. Some airlines - like JetBlue and Southwest - don't charge extra for baggage, but most do. Between 2009 and 2010, full-time students spent an average of $17,464 on tuition, room, and board, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. By law, the three major credit bureaus have to give you a free copy of your credit report once per year. Don't buy one until you've used up your freebies at AnnualCreditReport.com.
Once you order your free credit reports, dispute any errors you find with the credit bureaus. Errors lower your credit score, and a lower credit score means higher interest rates and wasted money. I'm an avid reader, but I haven't paid the suggested price in years. There are plenty of free or cheaper options for getting new books:
1. Get them from the library for free.

Some brand names are worth paying a little more for, but in many cases, the cheaper generics are the same quality as the brand names. For example, basic food stocks like rice, sugar, flour, and butter taste the same no matter what the label says. And generic over-the-counter meds? They work just as well as the name brands. My bank charged a $2.50 "convenience fee" for using an ATM that's not in its network. Convenient for who? I didn't live by a branch, so I was paying around $130 a year to use my own money. I changed banks, and now I use an app - ATM Hunter - to find a branch ATM. (credit:Flickr: redspotted)

If you're not paying your credit card balance off in full each month, you're wasting money on interest. If you carry a $1,000 balance on a card that charges 18 percent, you'll waste $180 every year just on interest. 3. Bottled Water(48 of50)

A 16-ounce bottle of water costs about $1.50 at my local gas station. Buy a bottle of water five days a week, and you'll spend $30 a month and $360 a year. While it's not really free, water from your tap is much cheaper. If you hate the taste - and I do - you can buy a water-filtration system for as little as $20. 2. Checking Accounts(49 of50)

Big banks charge an average of $110 a year for checking accounts if customers don't meet their minimum requirements, U.S. News & World Report recently revealed. Your options?
Move your money to a community bank that will offer better terms, or head to a credit union. The National Credit Union Administration has a Credit Union Locator tool to help you find one in your area.
For those comfortable enough with the tech, consider going to an online-only bank. Without the overhead of brick-and-mortar branches, the terms are often much better. The average cost of cable is about $100 a month right now. And it's still rising. A recent study by consumer research firm NPD Group says it "expects the average pay-TV bill to reach $123 by the year 2015 and $200 by 2020." I canceled my cable about six months ago and haven't looked back. I keep up on the TV shows I like with Netflix ($9.99 per month for streaming) and Hulu (free for basic, $7.99 per month for extended). Many networks also stream their shows on their websites.
