Colbert Says Obama Should Invade Saskatchewan (VIDEO, TWEETS)

Colbert: Obama Should Invade Saskatchewan
|

In his latest salvo at Canada, late-night host Stephen Colbert suggested that U.S. President Barack Obama should invade Saskatchewan, drawing an immediate response from its premier.

The host of "The Colbert Report" was discussing Vladimir Putin's popularity with Michael McFaul, former U.S. ambassador to Russia, on Monday night. McFaul said that Putin remains popular after economic sanctions that have followed the Russian president's work to annex Crimea.

To that, Colbert said, "Maybe Obama should invade Saskatchewan, or something like that."

It wasn't long before the suggestion caught the ear of Premier Brad Wall, who tweeted the following on Tuesday morning:

This is hardly the first time that Colbert has turned his sights on the Great White North.

In 2012, he accused Canada of being on a quest for world currency domination after the Royal Canadian Mint announced plans for coins with glow-in-the-dark Alberta dinosaurs.

And in his book "America Again: Re-Becoming the Greatness We Never Weren't," Colbert asked in a footnote of a chapter on geothermal energy whether Windsor, Ont. was the "Earth's rectum."

He responded to the controversy that followed by saying, "It is my job to ask these probing questions ... it could easily be Winnipeg."
