This Is How Miserable Toronto Sports Fans Really Are

Toronto sports fans are among the most miserable in North America.

You may have suspected as much. But now there's data to prove it.

Canadian data visualizers The 10 and 3 have produced a "Misery Score" to rank which cities have the most disappointed fans. And Toronto didn't even come first in that: it was the second-most miserable in North America, with Cleveland taking the top spot.

The "misery scores" were tabulated by looking at a city's teams from the NHL, the NBA, the NFL and the MLB. They counted clubs' playoff appearances, series wins and championships, and capped all three point values at 30.

The 10 and 3 then added these numbers together, taking an average of all the teams' "misery scores" to come up with a total for the city.

Toronto's overall misery score was 50.40, for second place among the 24 teams ranked by The 10 and 3. Not a single other Canadian city ranked with them (but then, no other Canadian city has an NBA or MLB team).

In assigning Toronto its score, The 10 and 3 cited the NHL's Maple Leafs, who have not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, and have made only a single playoff appearance since the league's lockout in the 2004-05 season.

In that appearance, in 2013, the Leafs went to seven games in a first-round playoff series with the Boston Bruins before losing in the end.

The 10 and 3 also cited the Blue Jays, who it called the "most playoff-starved team in any major sport." The Jays have not made the playoffs since winning the 1992 and 1993 World Series.

Toronto achieved its score without any mention of the city's Major League Soccer team, which has not made the playoffs once in its nine-year history.

Perhaps the city's sports fans should be thankful for that.
