AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi has won from the Chandrayan Gutta constituency in the Telangana assembly elections on Tuesday, reported news agency ANI. Akbaruddin is AIMIM party chief Asaduddin Owaisi's younger brother.
Counting in the maiden polls for the Telangana Assembly began at 8 am on Tuesday. The state's first elections since its formation in 2014 were held on December 7 with a voter turnout of 73.20%.
On election day, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi had exuded confidence his party would be successful in the Telangana election. The party has fielded candidates in eight assembly segments in Hyderabad and is supporting TRS in other segments.
The TRS looks set to sweep the state with leads in 87 seats so far.
In the 119-member Telangana assembly, TRS had 63 seats earlier while Congress and TDP had 21 and 15 respectively.
The BJP contested alone this time, unlike in 2014, when it was in an alliance with the Telugu Desam Party.
